* | decnet: RCU conversion and get rid of dev_base_lockEric Dumazet2010-11-081-1/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While tracking dev_base_lock users, I found decnet used it in dnet_select_source(), but for a wrong purpose: Writers only hold RTNL, not dev_base_lock, so readers must use RCU if they cannot use RTNL. Adds an rcu_head in struct dn_ifaddr and handle proper RCU management. Adds __rcu annotation in dn_route as well. * net: sk_sleep() helperEric Dumazet2010-04-201-13/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Define a new function to return the waitqueue of a "struct sock". static inline wait_queue_head_t *sk_sleep(struct sock *sk) { return sk->sk_sleep; } Change all read occurrences of sk_sleep by a call to this function. Needed for a future RCU conversion. sk_sleep wont be a field directly available. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
* net: sk_dst_cache RCUificationEric Dumazet2010-04-131-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With latest CONFIG_PROVE_RCU stuff, I felt more comfortable to make this work. sk->sk_dst_cache is currently protected by a rwlock (sk_dst_lock) This rwlock is readlocked for a very small amount of time, and dst entries are already freed after RCU grace period. This calls for RCU again :) This patch converts sk_dst_lock to a spinlock, and use RCU for readers. __sk_dst_get() is supposed to be called with rcu_read_lock() or if socket locked by user, so use appropriate rcu_dereference_check() condition (rcu_read_lock_held() || sock_owned_by_user(sk)) This patch avoids two atomic ops per tx packet on UDP connected sockets, for example, and permits sk_dst_lock to be much less dirtied. * [NET]: Make the device list and device lookups per namespace.Eric W. Biederman2007-10-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch makes most of the generic device layer network namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a network namespace variable, and then it picks up a few associated variables. The functions: dev_getbyhwaddr dev_getfirsthwbytype dev_get_by_flags dev_get_by_name __dev_get_by_name dev_get_by_index __dev_get_by_index dev_ioctl dev_ethtool dev_load wireless_process_ioctl were modified to take a network namespace argument, and deal with it. vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their hooks will receive a network namespace argument. So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces. For now the ifindex generator is left global. Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else we will have corner case problems with migration when we get that far. At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when you change namespaces, and the like. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [NET]: Make device event notification network namespace safeEric W. Biederman2007-10-101-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Every user of the network device notifiers is either a protocol stack or a pseudo device. If a protocol stack that does not have support for multiple network namespaces receives an event for a device that is not in the initial network namespace it quite possibly can get confused and do the wrong thing. To avoid problems until all of the protocol stacks are converted this patch modifies all netdev event handlers to ignore events on devices that are not in the initial network namespace. As the rest of the code is made network namespace aware these checks can be removed. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
* [NET]: Make socket creation namespace safe.Eric W. Biederman2007-10-101-5/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch passes in the namespace a new socket should be created in and has the socket code do the appropriate reference counting. By virtue of this all socket create methods are touched. In addition the socket create methods are modified so that they will fail if you attempt to create a socket in a non-default network namespace. Failing if we attempt to create a socket outside of the default network namespace ensures that as we incrementally make the network stack network namespace aware we will not export functionality that someone has not audited and made certain is network namespace safe. Allowing us to partially enable network namespaces before all of the exotic protocols are supported. Any protocol layers I have missed will fail to compile because I now pass an extra parameter into the socket creation code. * [NET]: Make /proc/net per network namespaceEric W. Biederman2007-10-101-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace. The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument, and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument. This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces. Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents that are relevant to a single network namespace. * [DECnet]: Endian annotation and fixes for DECnet.Steven Whitehouse2006-03-201-8/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The typedef for dn_address has been removed in favour of using __le16 or __u16 directly as appropriate. All the DECnet header files are updated accordingly. The byte ordering of dn_eth2dn() and dn_dn2eth() are both changed since just about all their callers wanted network order rather than host order, so the conversion is now done in the functions themselves. Several missed endianess conversions have been picked up during the conversion process. The nh_gw field in struct dn_fib_info has been changed from a 32 bit field to 16 bits as it ought to be. One or two cases of using htons rather than dn_htons in the routing code have been found and fixed. There are still a few warnings to fix, but this patch deals with the important cases. * [NET]: move struct proto_ops to constEric Dumazet2006-01-031-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I noticed that some of 'struct proto_ops' used in the kernel may share a cache line used by locks or other heavily modified data. (default linker alignement is 32 bytes, and L1_CACHE_LINE is 64 or 128 at least) This patch makes sure a 'struct proto_ops' can be declared as const, so that all cpus can share all parts of it without false sharing. This is not mandatory : a driver can still use a read/write structure if it needs to (and eventually a __read_mostly) I made a global stubstitute to change all existing occurences to make them const. This should reduce the possibility of false sharing on SMP, and speedup some socket system calls. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
