* net: Remove unnecessary returns from void function()sJoe Perches2010-05-174-59/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch removes from net/ (but not any netfilter files) all the unnecessary return; statements that precede the last closing brace of void functions. It does not remove the returns that are immediately preceded by a label as gcc doesn't like that. Done via: $ grep -rP --include=*.[ch] -l "return;\n}" net/ | \ xargs perl -i -e 'local $/ ; while (<>) { s/\n[ \t\n]+return;\n}/\n}/g; print; }' Signed-off-by: Joe Perches <joe@perches.com> Signed-off-by: David S. * net: sock_def_readable() and friends RCU conversionEric Dumazet2010-05-011-8/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | sk_callback_lock rwlock actually protects sk->sk_sleep pointer, so we need two atomic operations (and associated dirtying) per incoming packet. RCU conversion is pretty much needed : 1) Add a new structure, called "struct socket_wq" to hold all fields that will need rcu_read_lock() protection (currently: a wait_queue_head_t and a struct fasync_struct pointer). [Future patch will add a list anchor for wakeup coalescing] 2) Attach one of such structure to each "struct socket" created in sock_alloc_inode(). 3) Respect RCU grace period when freeing a "struct socket_wq" 4) Change sk_sleep pointer in "struct sock" by sk_wq, pointer to "struct socket_wq" 5) Change sk_sleep() function to use new sk->sk_wq instead of sk->sk_sleep 6) Change sk_has_sleeper() to wq_has_sleeper() that must be used inside a rcu_read_lock() section. 7) Change all sk_has_sleeper() callers to : - Use rcu_read_lock() instead of read_lock(&sk->sk_callback_lock) - Use wq_has_sleeper() to eventually wakeup tasks. - Use rcu_read_unlock() instead of read_unlock(&sk->sk_callback_lock) 8) sock_wake_async() is modified to use rcu protection as well. 9) Exceptions : macvtap, drivers/net/tun.c, af_unix use integrated "struct socket_wq" instead of dynamically allocated ones. They dont need rcu freeing. Some cleanups or followups are probably needed, (possible sk_callback_lock conversion to a spinlock for example...). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Define a new function to return the waitqueue of a "struct sock". static inline wait_queue_head_t *sk_sleep(struct sock *sk) { return sk->sk_sleep; } Change all read occurrences of sk_sleep by a call to this function. Needed for a future RCU conversion. sk_sleep wont be a field directly available. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

| * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-3014-0/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. * net/atm: move all compat_ioctl handling to atm/ioctl.cArnd Bergmann2009-11-111-2/+175
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We have two implementations of the compat_ioctl handling for ATM, the one that we have had for ages in fs/compat_ioctl.c and the one added to net/atm/ioctl.c by David Woodhouse. Unfortunately, both versions are incomplete, and in practice we use a very confusing combination of the two. For ioctl numbers that have the same identifier on 32 and 64 bit systems, we go directly through the compat_ioctl socket operation, for those that differ, we do a conversion in fs/compat_ioctl.c. This patch moves both variants into the vcc_compat_ioctl() function, while preserving the current behaviour. It also kills off the COMPATIBLE_IOCTL definitions that we never use here. Doing it this way is clearly not a good solution, but I hope it is a step into the right direction, so that someone is able to clean up this mess for real. * net: Generalize socket rx gap / receive queue overflow cmsgNeil Horman2009-10-121-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Create a new socket level option to report number of queue overflows Recently I augmented the AF_PACKET protocol to report the number of frames lost on the socket receive queue between any two enqueued frames. This value was exported via a SOL_PACKET level cmsg. AFter I completed that work it was requested that this feature be generalized so that any datagram oriented socket could make use of this option. As such I've created this patch, It creates a new SOL_SOCKET level option called SO_RXQ_OVFL, which when enabled exports a SOL_SOCKET level cmsg that reports the nubmer of times the sk_receive_queue overflowed between any two given frames. It also augments the AF_PACKET protocol to take advantage of this new feature (as it previously did not touch sk->sk_drops, which this patch uses to record the overflow count). Tested successfully by me. Notes: 1) Unlike my previous patch, this patch simply records the sk_drops value, which is not a number of drops between packets, but rather a total number of drops. Deltas must be computed in user space. 2) While this patch currently works with datagram oriented protocols, it will also be accepted by non-datagram oriented protocols. I'm not sure if thats agreeable to everyone, but my argument in favor of doing so is that, for those protocols which aren't applicable to this option, sk_drops will always be zero, and reporting no drops on a receive queue that isn't used for those non-participating protocols seems reasonable to me. This also saves us having to code in a per-protocol opt in mechanism. 3) This applies cleanly to net-next assuming that commit 977750076d98c7ff6cbda51858bb5a5894a9d9ab (my af packet cmsg patch) is reverted Signed-off-by: Neil Horman <nhorman@tuxdriver.com> Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Adding fuctions sock_poll_wait and sk_has_sleeper to wrap the memory barrier. Without the memory barrier, following race can happen. The race fires, when following code paths meet, and the tp->rcv_nxt and __add_wait_queue updates stay in CPU caches. CPU1 CPU2 sys_select receive packet ... ... __add_wait_queue update tp->rcv_nxt ... ... tp->rcv_nxt check sock_def_readable ... { schedule ... if (sk->sk_sleep && waitqueue_active(sk->sk_sleep)) wake_up_interruptible(sk->sk_sleep) ... } If there was no cache the code would work ok, since the wait_queue and rcv_nxt are opposit to each other. Meaning that once tp->rcv_nxt is updated by CPU2, the CPU1 either already passed the tp->rcv_nxt check and sleeps, or will get the new value for tp->rcv_nxt and will return with new data mask. In both cases the process (CPU1) is being added to the wait queue, so the waitqueue_active (CPU2) call cannot miss and will wake up CPU1. The bad case is when the __add_wait_queue changes done by CPU1 stay in its cache, and so does the tp->rcv_nxt update on CPU2 side. The CPU1 will then endup calling schedule and sleep forever if there are no more data on the socket. Some occurences are missed by the automatic conversion, those will be handled in a seperate patch. Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. * atm: sk_wmem_alloc initial value is oneEric Dumazet2009-06-184-11/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | commit 2b85a34e911bf483c27cfdd124aeb1605145dc80 (net: No more expensive sock_hold()/sock_put() on each tx) changed initial sk_wmem_alloc value. This broke net/atm since this protocol assumed a null initial value. This patch makes necessary changes. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. * net: fix network drivers ndo_start_xmit() return values (part 7)Patrick McHardy2009-06-131-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | Fix up ATM drivers that return an errno value to qdisc_restart(), causing qdisc_restart() to print a warning an requeue/retransmit the skb. - lec: condition can only be remedied by userspace, until that retransmissions Compile tested only. * bridge: Simplify interface for ATM LANEMichał Mirosław2009-06-111-13/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch changes FDB entry check for ATM LANE bridge integration. There's no point in holding a FDB entry around SKB building. br_fdb_get()/br_fdb_put() pair are changed into single br_fdb_test_addr() hook that checks if the addr has FDB entry pointing to other port to the one the request arrived on. FDB entry refcounting is removed as it's not used anywhere else. Signed-off-by: Michał Mirosław <mirq-linux@rere.qmqm.pl> Acked-by: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@vyatta.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
