This causes the soft lockup detector on these machine to report warnings. Avoid this by touching the soft lockup watchdog in the memory bitmap walking code. This doesn't scale very well with large numbers of pfns, especially when the bitmaps are not populated very densly. Change the algorithm to iterate over the set bits in the bitmaps instead to make it scale better in large memory configurations. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The commit [247bc037: PM / Sleep: Mitigate race between the freezer and request_firmware()] introduced the finer state control, but it also leads to a new bug; for example, a bug report regarding the firmware loading of intel BT device at suspend/resume: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=873790 The root cause seems to be a small window between the process resume and the clear of usermodehelper lock. The request_firmware() function checks the UMH lock and gives up when it's in UMH_DISABLE state. This is for avoiding the invalid f/w loading during suspend/resume phase. The problem is, however, that usermodehelper_enable() is called at the end of thaw_processes(). Thus, a thawed process in between can kick off the f/w loader code path (in this case, via btusb_setup_intel()) even before the call of usermodehelper_enable(). Then usermodehelper_read_trylock() returns an error and request_firmware() spews WARN_ON() in the end. This oneliner patch fixes the issue just by setting to UMH_FREEZING state again before restarting tasks, so that the call of request_firmware() will be blocked until the end of this function instead of returning an error. The event is triggered by calling the function "trace_suspend_resume" with three arguments: a string (the name of the event to be displayed in the timeline), an integer (case specific number, such as the power state or cpu number), and a boolean (where true is used to denote the start of the timeline event, and false to denote the end). The suspend_resume trace event reproduces the data that the machine_suspend trace event did, so the latter has been removed. However, some user space frameworks only use the "mem" and (sometimes) "standby" sleep state labels, so the users of those systems need to modify user space in order to be able to use system suspend at all and that is not always possible. For this reason, add a new kernel command line argument, relative_sleep_states, allowing the users of those systems to change the way in which the kernel assigns labels to system sleep states. Namely, for relative_sleep_states=1, the "mem", "standby" and "freeze" labels will enumerate the available system sleem states from the deepest to the shallowest, respectively, so that "mem" is always present in /sys/power/state and the other state strings may or may not be presend depending on what is supported by the platform. It may be used to prevent hardware from choosing overly aggressive energy-saving operation modes (causing too much latency to appear) for the whole platform. This feature reqiures hardware support, so it only will be available for devices having a new .set_latency_tolerance() callback in struct dev_pm_info populated, in which case the routine pointed to by it should implement whatever is necessary to transfer the effective requirement value to the hardware. Whenever the effective latency tolerance changes for the device, its .set_latency_tolerance() callback will be executed and the effective value will be passed to it. If that value is negative, which means that the list of latency tolerance requirements for the device is empty, the callback is expected to switch the underlying hardware latency tolerance control mechanism to an autonomous mode if available. If that value is PM_QOS_LATENCY_ANY, in turn, and the hardware supports a special "no requirement" setting, the callback is expected to use it. That allows software to prevent the hardware from automatically updating the device's latency tolerance in response to its power state changes (e.g. during transitions from D3cold to D0), which generally may be done in the autonomous latency tolerance control mode. If .set_latency_tolerance() is present for the device, a new pm_qos_latency_tolerance_us attribute will be present in the devivce's power directory in sysfs. Then, user space can use that attribute to specify its latency tolerance requirement for the device, if any. Writing "any" to it means "no requirement, but do not let the hardware control latency tolerance" and writing "auto" to it allows the hardware to be switched to the autonomous mode if there are no other requirements from the kernel side in the device's list.
