Also allow to read out the ecc statistics information so userspace tools can see that bitflips happened and whether errors where correctable or not. The handling of out of band data on NAND was accompanied by tons of fruitless discussions and halfarsed patches to make it work for a particular problem. Sufficiently annoyed by I all those "I know it better" mails and the resonable amount of discarded "it solves my problem" patches, I finally decided to go for the big rework. After removing the _ecc variants of mtd read/write functions the solution to satisfy the various requirements was to refactor the read/write _oob functions in mtd. The major change is that read/write_oob now takes a pointer to an operation descriptor structure "struct mtd_oob_ops".instead of having a function with at least seven arguments. read/write_oob which should probably renamed to a more descriptive name, can do the following tasks: - read/write out of band data - read/write data content and out of band data - read/write raw data content and out of band data (ecc disabled) struct mtd_oob_ops has a mode field, which determines the oob handling mode. Aside of the MTD_OOB_RAW mode, which is intended to be especially for diagnostic purposes and some internal functions e.g. bad block table creation, the other two modes are for mtd clients: MTD_OOB_PLACE puts/gets the given oob data exactly to/from the place which is described by the ooboffs and ooblen fields of the mtd_oob_ops strcuture. It's up to the caller to make sure that the byte positions are not used by the ECC placement algorithms. MTD_OOB_AUTO puts/gets the given oob data automaticaly to/from the places in the out of band area which are described by the oobfree tuples in the ecclayout data structre which is associated to the devicee. The decision whether data plus oob or oob only handling is done depends on the setting of the datbuf member of the data structure. When datbuf == NULL then the internal read/write_oob functions are selected, otherwise the read/write data routines are invoked. Tested on a few platforms with all variants. Please be aware of possible regressions for your particular device / application scenario Disclaimer: Any whining will be ignored from those who just contributed "hot air blurb" and never sat down to tackle the underlying problem of the mess in the NAND driver grown over time and the big chunk of work to fix up the existing users. The problem was not the holiness of the existing MTD interfaces. The problems was the lack of time to go for the big overhaul. There are some significant differences from previous version posted at last December. The biggest change is addition of EBS(Erase Block Summary) support. Currently, both kernel and usermode utility (sumtool) can recognize xattr nodes which have JFFS2_NODETYPE_XATTR/_XREF nodetype. In addition, some bugs are fixed. - A potential race condition was fixed. - Unexpected fail when updating a xattr by same name/value pair was fixed. - A bug when removing xattr name/value pair was fixed. The fundamental structures (such as using two new nodetypes and exclusion mechanism by rwsem) are unchanged. But most of implementation were reviewed and updated if necessary. Espacially, we had to change several internal implementations related to load_xattr_datum() to avoid a potential race condition. Just extend that to 4 bytes and use new_encode_dev() for it. We only use the 4-byte format if we _need_ to, if !old_valid_dev(foo). This preserves backwards compatibility with older code as much as possible. If we do make devices with major or minor numbers above 255, and then mount the file system with the old code, it'll just read the first two bytes and get the numbers wrong. This deadlocks the kernel of course. This patch changes symbol_put_addr() to not acquire the modlist_lock, it doesn't need it since it never looks at the module list directly. Also, it now uses core_kernel_text() instead of kernel_text_address(). The latter has an additional check for addr inside a module, but we don't need to do that since we call module_text_address() (the same function kernel_text_address uses) ourselves. The neigh_table_init function adds this neighbour table to a linked list of all neighbor tables which is used by the functions neigh_delete() neigh_add() and neightbl_set(), all called by the netlink code. Once the ATM neighbour table is added to the list, there are two tables with family == AF_INET there, and ARP entries sent via netlink go into the first table with matching family. This is indeterminate and often wrong. To see the bug, on a kernel with CLIP enabled, create a standard IPv4 ARP entry by pinging an unused address on a local subnet. Then attempt to complete that entry by doing ip neigh replace <ip address> lladdr <some mac address> nud reachable Looking at the ARP tables by using ip neigh show will reveal two ARP entries for the same address. One of these can be found in /proc/net/arp, and the other in /proc/net/atm/arp. This patch adds a new function, neigh_table_init_no_netlink() which does everything the neigh_table_init() does, except add the table to the netlink all-arp-tables chain. In addition neigh_table_init() has a check that all tables on the chain have a distinct address family. The init call in clip.c is changed to call neigh_table_init_no_netlink(). Since ATM ARP tables are rather more complicated than can currently be handled by the available rtattrs in the netlink protocol, no functionality is lost by this patch, and non-ATM ARP manipulation via netlink is rescued. A more complete solution would involve a rtattr for ATM ARP entries and some way for the netlink code to give neigh_add and friends more information than just address family with which to find the correct ARP table. [ I've changed the assertion checking in neigh_table_init() to not use BUG_ON() while holding neigh_tbl_lock.
