Also replace the inode_double_lock() call with a pipe_double_lock() helper to avoid spreading the use of this functionality beyond the pipe code. This is unfortunate because many archs have smaller instructions when using small offsets relative to a base register. On x86 for example, 7 bits offsets have smaller instruction lengths. Here are results from that on a UP machine with highmem (1.5GiB of RAM), running first a UP kernel, SMP kernel, and SMP kernel patched. Splice rarely needs to access the virtual address of a page, so it's a waste of time doing it. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
