* [PATCH] x86-64: Fix fake numa for x86_64 machines with big IO holeRohit Seth2007-02-131-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch resolves the issue of running with numa=fake=X on kernel command line on x86_64 machines that have big IO hole. While calculating the size of each node now we look at the total hole size in that range. Previously there were nodes that only had IO holes in them causing kernel boot problems. We now use the NODE_MIN_SIZE (64MB) as the minimum size of memory that any node must have. We reduce the number of allocated nodes if the number of nodes specified on kernel command line results in any node getting memory smaller than NODE_MIN_SIZE. This change allows the extra memory to be incremented in NODE_MIN_SIZE granule and uniformly distribute among as many nodes (called big nodes) as possible. * [PATCH] x86-64: Allocate the NUMA hash function nodemap dynamicallyAmul Shah2007-02-131-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the statically allocated memory to NUMA node hash map in favor of a dynamically allocated memory to node hash map (it is cache aligned). This patch has the nice side effect in that it allows the hash map to grow for systems with large amounts of memory (256GB - 1TB), but suffer from having small PCI space tacked onto the boot node (which is somewhere between 192MB to 512MB on the ES7000). | * [PATCH] Convert x86-64 to early paramAndi Kleen2006-09-261-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Instead of hackish manual parsing Requires earlier i386 patchkit, but also fixes i386 early_printk again. I removed some obsolete really early parameters which didn't do anything useful. Also made a few parameters that needed it early (mostly oops printing setup) Also removed one panic check that wasn't visible without early console anyways (the early console is now initialized after that panic) This cleans up a lot of code. * | [PATCH] Make swsusp avoid memory holes and reserved memory regions on x86_64Rafael J. Wysocki2006-09-261-0/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | On x86_64 machines with more than 2 GB of RAM there are large memory gaps (with no corresponding kernel virtual addresses) and reserved memory regions between areas of usable physical RAM. Moreover, if CONFIG_FLATMEM is set, they appear within the normal zone. swsusp should not try to save them, so the corresponding page structs have to be marked as 'nosave'. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. * [PATCH] x86_64: Avoid EBDA area in early boot allocatorAndi Kleen2006-05-081-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Based on analysis&patch from Robert Hentosch Observed on a Dell PE6850 with 16GB The problem occurs very early on, when the kernel allocates space for the temporary memory map called bootmap. The bootmap overlaps the EBDA region. EBDA region is not historically reserved in the e820 mapping. When the bootmap is freed it marks the EBDA region as usable. If you notice in setup.c there is already code to work around the EBDA in reserve_ebda_region(), this check however occurs after the bootmap is allocated and doesn't prevent the bootmap from using this range. AK: I redid the original patch. Thanks also to Jan Beulich for spotting some mistakes. * [PATCH] x86_64: Introduce e820_all_mappedArjan van de Ven2006-04-091-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Introduce a e820_all_mapped() function which checks if the entire range <start,end> is mapped with type. This is done by moving the local start variable to the end of each known-good region; if at the end of the function the start address is still before end, there must be a part that's not of the correct type; otherwise it's a good region. * [PATCH] x86_64: Rename e820_mapped to e820_any_mappedArjan van de Ven2006-04-091-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Rename e820_mapped to e820_any_mapped since it tests if any part of the range is mapped according to the type. Later steps will introduce e820_all_mapped which will check if the entire range is mapped with the type. Both have their merit. * [PATCH] kdump: x86_64: add memmmap command line optionakpm@osdl.org2006-01-101-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ) From: Vivek Goyal <vgoyal@in.ibm.com> - This patch introduces the memmap option for x86_64 similar to i386. - memmap=exactmap enables setting of an exact E820 memory map, as specified by the user. Changes in this version: - Used e820_end_of_ram() to find the max_pfn as suggested by Andi kleen. - removed PFN_UP & PFN_DOWN macros - Printing the user defined map also. * [PATCH] x86_64: Tell VM about holes in nodesAndi Kleen2005-08-261-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some nodes can have large holes on x86-64. This fixes problems with the VM allowing too many dirty pages because it overestimates the number of available RAM in a node. In extreme cases you can end up with all RAM filled with dirty pages which can lead to deadlocks and other nasty behaviour. This patch just tells the VM about the known holes from e820. Reserved (like the kernel text or mem_map) is still not taken into account, but that should be only a few percent error now. Small detail is that the flat setup uses the NUMA free_area_init_node() now too because it offers more flexibility. * [PATCH] Increase number of e820 entries hard limit from 32 to 128Venkatesh Pallipadi2005-05-011-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The specifications that talk about E820 map doesn't have an upper limit on the number of e820 entries. But, today's kernel has a hard limit of 32. With increase in memory size, we are seeing the number of E820 entries reaching close to 32. Patch below bumps the number upto 128. The patch changes the location of EDDBUF in zero-page (as it comes after E820). As, EDDBUF is not used by boot loaders, this patch should not have any effect on bootloader-setup code interface. Patch covers both i386 and x86-64. Tested on: * grub booting bzImage * lilo booting bzImage with EDID info enabled * pxeboot of bzImage Side-effect: bss increases by ~ 2K and init.data increases by ~7.5K on all systems, due to increase in size of static arrays. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
