* [PATCH] semaphore: Remove __MUTEX_INITIALIZER()Arthur Othieno2005-10-301-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | __MUTEX_INITIALIZER() has no users, and equates to the more commonly used DECLARE_MUTEX(), thus making it pretty much redundant. Remove it for good. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Sysfs interface to export ipl device parameters. Dependent on the ipl type the interface will look like this: - ccw ipl: /sys/firmware/ipl/device /ipl_type - fcp ipl: /sys/firmware/ipl/binary_parameter /bootprog /br_lba /device /ipl_type /lun /scp_data /wwpn - otherwise (unknown that is): /sys/firmware/ipl/ipl_type Acked-by: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Greg KH <greg@kroah.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] add sem_is_read/write_locked()Rik Van Riel2005-10-291-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | Add sem_is_read/write_locked functions to the read/write semaphores, along the same lines of the *_is_locked spinlock functions. The swap token tuning patch uses sem_is_read_locked; sem_is_write_locked is added for completeness. * [PATCH] Remove unused var from asm/futex.hPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso2005-09-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As recently done by Russell King for ARM, commit 4732efbeb997189d9f9b04708dc26bf8613ed721 introduces a generic asm/futex.h copied along most arches, which includes a "-ENOSYS support" to be changed if needed. However, it includes an unused var (taken from the "real" version) which GCC warns about. Remove it from all arches having that file version (i.e. same GIT id). $ git-diff-tree -r HEAD and $ git-ls-tree -r HEAD include/|grep 9feff4ce1424bc390608326240be369eb13aa648 may be more interesting than looking at the patch itself, to make sure I've just copied the arm header to all other archs having the original dummy version of this file. * [PATCH] spinlock consolidationIngo Molnar2005-09-102-40/+44
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch (written by me and also containing many suggestions of Arjan van de Ven) does a major cleanup of the spinlock code. It does the following things: - consolidates and enhances the spinlock/rwlock debugging code - simplifies the asm/spinlock.h files - encapsulates the raw spinlock type and moves generic spinlock features (such as ->break_lock) into the generic code. - cleans up the spinlock code hierarchy to get rid of the spaghetti. Most notably there's now only a single variant of the debugging code, located in lib/spinlock_debug.c. (previously we had one SMP debugging variant per architecture, plus a separate generic one for UP builds) Also, i've enhanced the rwlock debugging facility, it will now track write-owners. There is new spinlock-owner/CPU-tracking on SMP builds too. All locks have lockup detection now, which will work for both soft and hard spin/rwlock lockups. The arch-level include files now only contain the minimally necessary subset of the spinlock code - all the rest that can be generalized now lives in the generic headers: include/asm-i386/spinlock_types.h | 16 include/asm-x86_64/spinlock_types.h | 16 I have also split up the various spinlock variants into separate files, making it easier to see which does what. The new layout is: SMP | UP ----------------------------|----------------------------------- asm/spinlock_types_smp.h | linux/spinlock_types_up.h linux/spinlock_types.h | linux/spinlock_types.h asm/spinlock_smp.h | linux/spinlock_up.h linux/spinlock_api_smp.h | linux/spinlock_api_up.h linux/spinlock.h | linux/spinlock.h /* * here's the role of the various spinlock/rwlock related include files: * * on SMP builds: * * asm/spinlock_types.h: contains the raw_spinlock_t/raw_rwlock_t and the * initializers * * linux/spinlock_types.h: * defines the generic type and initializers * * asm/spinlock.h: contains the __raw_spin_*()/etc. lowlevel * implementations, mostly inline assembly code * * (also included on UP-debug builds:) * * linux/spinlock_api_smp.h: * contains the prototypes for the _spin_*() APIs. * * linux/spinlock.h: builds the final spin_*() APIs. * * on UP builds: * * linux/spinlock_type_up.h: * contains the generic, simplified UP spinlock type. * (which is an empty structure on non-debug builds) * * linux/spinlock_types.h: * defines the generic type and initializers * * linux/spinlock_up.h: * contains the __raw_spin_*()/etc. version of UP * builds. (which are NOPs on non-debug, non-preempt * builds) * * (included on UP-non-debug builds:) * * linux/spinlock_api_up.h: * builds the _spin_*() APIs. * * linux/spinlock.h: builds the final spin_*() APIs. */ All SMP and UP architectures are converted by this patch. arm, i386, ia64, ppc, ppc64, s390/s390x, x64 was build-tested via crosscompilers. m32r, mips, sh, sparc, have not been tested yet, but should be mostly fine. From: Grant Grundler <grundler@parisc-linux.org> Booted and lightly tested on a500-44 (64-bit, SMP kernel, dual CPU). Builds 32-bit SMP kernel (not booted or tested). I did not try to build non-SMP kernels. That should be trivial to fix up later if necessary. I converted bit ops atomic_hash lock to raw_spinlock_t. Doing so avoids some ugly nesting of linux/*.h and asm/*.h files. Those particular locks are well tested and contained entirely inside arch specific code. I do NOT expect any new issues to arise with them. If someone does ever need to use debug/metrics with them, then they will need to unravel this hairball between spinlocks, atomic ops, and bit ops that exist only because parisc has exactly one atomic instruction: LDCW (load and clear word). * [PATCH] auxiliary vector cleanupsH. J. Lu2005-09-071-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | The size of auxiliary vector is fixed at 42 in linux/sched.h. But it isn't very obvious when looking at linux/elf.h. This patch adds AT_VECTOR_SIZE so that we can change it if necessary when a new vector is added. * [PATCH] compat: be more consistent about [ug]id_tStephen Rothwell2005-09-071-10/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When I first wrote the compat layer patches, I was somewhat cavalier about the definition of compat_uid_t and compat_gid_t (or maybe I just misunderstood :-)). This patch makes the compat types much more consistent with the types we are being compatible with and hopefully will fix a few bugs along the way. compat type type in compat arch __compat_[ug]id_t __kernel_[ug]id_t __compat_[ug]id32_t __kernel_[ug]id32_t compat_[ug]id_t [ug]id_t The difference is that compat_uid_t is always 32 bits (for the archs we care about) but __compat_uid_t may be 16 bits on some. * [PATCH] FUTEX_WAKE_OP: pthread_cond_signal() speedupJakub Jelinek2005-09-071-0/+53
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ATM pthread_cond_signal is unnecessarily slow, because it wakes one waiter (which at least on UP usually means an immediate context switch to one of the waiter threads). This waiter wakes up and after a few instructions it attempts to acquire the cv internal lock, but that lock is still held by the thread calling pthread_cond_signal. So it goes to sleep and eventually the signalling thread is scheduled in, unlocks the internal lock and wakes the waiter again. Now, before 2003-09-21 NPTL was using FUTEX_REQUEUE in pthread_cond_signal to avoid this performance issue, but it was removed when locks were redesigned to the 3 state scheme (unlocked, locked uncontended, locked contended). Following scenario shows why simply using FUTEX_REQUEUE in pthread_cond_signal together with using lll_mutex_unlock_force in place of lll_mutex_unlock is not enough and probably why it has been disabled at that time: The number is value in cv->__data.__lock. thr1 thr2 thr3 0 pthread_cond_wait 1 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 0 lll_mutex_unlock (cv->__data.__lock) 0 lll_futex_wait (&cv->__data.__futex, futexval) 0 pthread_cond_signal 1 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 1 pthread_cond_signal 2 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 2 lll_futex_wait (&cv->__data.__lock, 2) 2 lll_futex_requeue (&cv->__data.__futex, 0, 1, &cv->__data.__lock) # FUTEX_REQUEUE, not FUTEX_CMP_REQUEUE 2 lll_mutex_unlock_force (cv->__data.__lock) 0 cv->__data.__lock = 0 0 lll_futex_wake (&cv->__data.__lock, 1) 1 lll_mutex_lock (cv->__data.__lock) 0 lll_mutex_unlock (cv->__data.__lock) # Here, lll_mutex_unlock doesn't know there are threads waiting # on the internal cv's lock Now, I believe it is possible to use FUTEX_REQUEUE in pthread_cond_signal, but it will cost us not one, but 2 extra syscalls and, what's worse, one of these extra syscalls will be done for every single waiting loop in pthread_cond_*wait. We would need to use lll_mutex_unlock_force in pthread_cond_signal after requeue and lll_mutex_cond_lock in pthread_cond_*wait after lll_futex_wait. Another alternative is to do the unlocking pthread_cond_signal needs to do (the lock can't be unlocked before lll_futex_wake, as that is racy) in the kernel. I have implemented both variants, futex-requeue-glibc.patch is the first one and futex-wake_op{,-glibc}.patch is the unlocking inside of the kernel. The kernel interface allows userland to specify how exactly an unlocking operation should look like (some atomic arithmetic operation with optional constant argument and comparison of the previous futex value with another constant). It has been implemented just for ppc*, x86_64 and i?86, for other architectures I'm including just a stub header which can be used as a starting point by maintainers to write support for their arches and ATM will just return -ENOSYS for FUTEX_WAKE_OP. The requeue patch has been (lightly) tested just on x86_64, the wake_op patch on ppc64 kernel running 32-bit and 64-bit NPTL and x86_64 kernel running 32-bit and 64-bit NPTL. With the following benchmark on UP x86-64 I get: for i in nptl-orig nptl-requeue nptl-wake_op; do echo time elf/ld.so --library-path .:$i /tmp/bench; \ for j in 1 2; do echo ( time elf/ld.so --library-path .:$i /tmp/bench ) 2>&1; done; done time elf/ld.so --library-path .:nptl-orig /tmp/bench real 0m0.655s user 0m0.253s sys 0m0.403s real 0m0.657s user 0m0.269s sys 0m0.388s time elf/ld.so --library-path .:nptl-requeue /tmp/bench real 0m0.496s user 0m0.225s sys 0m0.271s real 0m0.531s user 0m0.242s sys 0m0.288s time elf/ld.so --library-path .:nptl-wake_op /tmp/bench real 0m0.380s user 0m0.176s sys 0m0.204s real 0m0.382s user 0m0.175s sys 0m0.207s The benchmark is at: http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2005-03/txt00001.txt Older futex-requeue-glibc.patch version is at: http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2005-03/txt00002.txt Older futex-wake_op-glibc.patch version is at: http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2005-03/txt00003.txt Will post a new version (just x86-64 fixes so that the patch applies against pthread_cond_signal.S) to libc-hacker ml soon. Attached is the kernel FUTEX_WAKE_OP patch as well as a simple-minded testcase that will not test the atomicity of the operation, but at least check if the threads that should have been woken up are woken up and whether the arithmetic operation in the kernel gave the expected results. * [PATCH] s390: spinlock corner caseHeiko Carstens2005-09-051-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | On s390 the lock value used for spinlocks consists of the lower 32 bits of the PSW that holds the lock. If this address happens to be on a four gigabyte boundary the lock is left unlocked. This allows other cpus to grab the same lock and enter a lock protected code path concurrently. In theory this can happen if the vmalloc area for the code of a module crosses a 4 GB boundary. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The new machine check handler still has a few bugs. 1) The system entry time has to be stored in the machine check handler, 2) the machine check return psw may not be stored at the usual place because it might overwrite the return psw of the interrupted context, 3) the return address for the call to s390_handle_mcck in the i/o interrupt handler is not correct, 4) the system call cleanup has to take the different save area of the machine check handler into account, 5) the machine check handler may not call UPDATE_VTIME before CREATE_STACK_FRAME, and 6) the io leave path needs a critical section cleanup to make sure that the TIF_MCCK_PENDING bit is really checked before switching back to user space. * [PATCH] s390: find_next_{zero}_bit fixesMartin Schwidefsky2005-07-271-300/+140
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The find_next_{zero}_bit primitives on s390* should never return a bit number bigger then the bit field size. In the case of a bitfield that doesn't end on a word boundary, an offset that makes the search start at the last word of the bit field and the last word doesn't contain any zero/one bits the search is continued with a call to find_first_bit with a negative size. The search normally ends pretty quickly because the words following the bit field contain a mix of zeros and ones. But the bit number that is returned in this case is too big. To fix this and additional if to check for this case is needed. To make the code easier to read I removed the assembler parts from the find_next_{zero}_bit functions, the C-ified code is as good. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Split spin lock and r/w lock implementation into a single try which is done inline and an out of line function that repeatedly tries to get the lock before doing the cpu_relax(). Add a system control to set the number of retries before a cpu is yielded. The reason for the spin lock retry is that the diagnose 0x44 that is used to give up the virtual cpu is quite expensive. For spin locks that are held only for a short period of time the costs of the diagnoses outweights the savings for spin locks that are held for a longer timer. The default retry count is 1000. But in many instances the kernel wants to reboot when thing are expected to be working very badly such as from panic or a software watchdog handler. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Instead of requiring architecture code to interact with the scheduler's locking implementation, provide a couple of defines that can be used by the architecture to request runqueue unlocked context switches, and ask for interrupts to be enabled over the context switch. Also replaces the "switch_lock" used by these architectures with an oncpu flag (note, not a potentially slow bitflag). This eliminates one bus locked memory operation when context switching, and simplifies the task_running function. * [PATCH] s390: debug feature changesMichael Holzheu2005-06-251-19/+29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch changes the memory allocation method for the s390 debug feature. Trace buffers had been allocated using the get_free_pages() function before. Therefore it was not possible to get big memory areas in a running system due to memory fragmentation. Now the trace buffers are subdivided into several subbuffers with pagesize. Therefore it is now possible to allocate more memory for the trace buffers and more trace records can be written. In addition to that, dynamic specification of the size of the trace buffers is implemented. It is now possible to change the size of a trace buffer using a new debugfs file instance. When writing a number into this file, the trace buffer size is changed to 'number * pagesize'. In the past all the traces could be obtained from userspace by accessing files in the "proc" filesystem. Now with debugfs we have a new filesystem which should be used for debugging purposes. This patch moves the debug feature from procfs to debugfs. Since the interface of debug_register() changed, all device drivers, which use the debug feature had to be adjusted. * [PATCH] streamline preempt_count type across archsJesper Juhl2005-06-231-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The preempt_count member of struct thread_info is currently either defined as int, unsigned int or __s32 depending on arch. This patch makes the type of preempt_count an int on all archs. Having preempt_count be an unsigned type prevents the catching of preempt_count < 0 bugs, and using int on some archs and __s32 on others is not exactely "neat" - much nicer when it's just int all over. A previous version of this patch was already ACK'ed by Robert Love, and the only change in this version of the patch compared to the one he ACK'ed is that this one also makes sure the preempt_count member is consistently commented. * [PATCH] smp_processor_id() cleanupIngo Molnar2005-06-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that Arjan van de Ven and I came up with. The previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API spaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the usage side. Some of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the complexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined __smp_processor_id. In the new code, there are two externally visible symbols: - smp_processor_id(): debug variant. - raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h. There is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT: - debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to smp_processor_id(). Also, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new lib/smp_processor_id.c file. All related comments got updated and/or clarified. I have build/boot tested the following 8 .config combinations on x86: {SMP,UP} x {PREEMPT,!PREEMPT} x {DEBUG_PREEMPT,!DEBUG_PREEMPT} I have also build/boot tested x64 on UP/PREEMPT/DEBUG_PREEMPT. (Other architectures are untested, but should work just fine.) * [PATCH] s390: uml ptrace fixesBodo Stroesser2005-06-041-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To make UML build and run on s390, I needed to do these two little changes: 1) UML includes some of the subarch's (s390) headers. I had to change one of them with the following one-liner, to make this compile. AFAICS, this change doesn't break compilation of s390 itself. 2) UML needs to intercept syscalls via ptrace to invalidate the syscall, read syscall's parameters and write the result with the result of UML's syscall processing. Also, UML needs to make sure, that the host does no syscall restart processing. On i386 for example, this can be done by writing -1 to orig_eax on the 2nd syscall interception (orig_eax is the syscall number, which after the interception is used as a "interrupt was a syscall" flag only. Unfortunately, s390 holds syscall number and syscall result in gpr2 and its "interrupt was a syscall" flag (trap) is unreachable via ptrace. So I changed the host to set trap to -1, if the syscall number is changed to an invalid value on the first syscall interception. * [PATCH] asm/signal.h unificationAl Viro2005-05-041-10/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | New file - asm-generic/signal.h. Contains declarations of __sighandler_t, __sigrestore_t, SIG_DFL, SIG_IGN, SIG_ERR and default definitions of SIG_BLOCK, SIG_UNBLOCK and SIG_SETMASK. asm-*/signal.h switched to including it. The only exception is asm-parisc/signal.h that wants its own declaration of __sighandler_t; that one is left as-is. asm-ppc64/signal.h required one more thing - unlike everybody else it used __sigrestorer_t instead of usual __sigrestore_t. PPC64 switched to common spelling. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@parcelfarce.linux.theplanet.co.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] move SA_xxx defines to linux/signal.hStas Sergeev2005-05-011-14/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The attached patch moves the IRQ-related SA_xxx flags (namely, SA_PROBE, SA_SAMPLE_RANDOM and SA_SHIRQ) from all the arch-specific headers to linux/signal.h. This looks like a left-over after the irq-handling code was consolidated. The code was moved to kernel/irq/*, but the flags are still left per-arch. Right now, adding a new IRQ flag to the arch-specific header, like this patch does: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/alsa/alsa-driver/utils/patches/pcsp-kernel-2.6.10-03.diff?rev=1.1 no longer works, it breaks the compilation for all other arches, unless you add that flag to all the other arch-specific headers too. So I think such a clean-up makes sense. Signed-off-by: Stas Sergeev <stsp@aknet.ru> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] freepgt: remove MM_VM_SIZE(mm)Hugh Dickins2005-04-191-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There's only one usage of MM_VM_SIZE(mm) left, and it's a troublesome macro because mm doesn't contain the (32-bit emulation?) info needed. But it too is only needed because we ignore the end from the vma list. We could make flush_pgtables return that end, or unmap_vmas. Choose the latter, since it's a natural fit with unmap_mapping_range_vma needing to know its restart addr. This does make more than minimal change, but if unmap_vmas had returned the end before, this is how we'd have done it, rather than storing the break_addr in zap_details. unmap_vmas used to return count of vmas scanned, but that's just debug which hasn't been useful in a while; and if we want the map_count 0 on exit check back, it can easily come from the final remove_vm_struct loop. * Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-16102-0/+12928
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
