* [PARISC] print more than one character at a time for pdc consoleKyle McMartin2007-12-061-2/+1
| | | | | | | | There's really no reason not to print more than one character at a time to the PDC console... Booting is measurably speedier, and now I don't have to watch individual characters get drawn. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca>

* Change table chaining layoutJens Axboe2007-10-221-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change the page member of the scatterlist structure to be an unsigned long, and encode more stuff in the lower bits: - Bits 0 and 1 zero: this is a normal sg entry. Next sg entry is located at sg + 1. - Bit 0 set: this is a chain entry, the next real entry is at ->page_link with the two low bits masked off. - Bit 1 set: this is the final entry in the sg entry. sg_next() will return NULL when passed such an entry. It's thus important that sg table users use the proper accessors to get and set the page member. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>

| * [PARISC] fix uninitialized variable warning in asm/rtc.hKyle McMartin2007-10-201-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | get_rtc_time, in the case that PDC returns that the battery is bad, returns an unmodified rtc_time arg to the caller, which then uses uninitialized values. Fix this by memset-ing the arg with zeroes, so it will at least be cleared if we return failure. Spotted by John David Anglin. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca>

* Remove dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) functionsRalf Baechle2007-10-171-5/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) were the earliest attempt on a generalized cache managment API for I/O purposes. Originally it was basically the raw MIPS low level cache API exported to the entire world. The API has suffered from a lack of documentation, was not very widely used unlike it's more modern brothers and can easily be replaced by dma_cache_sync. So remove it rsp. turn the surviving bits back into an arch private API, as discussed on linux-arch. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the __STRICT_ANSI__ check from the __u64/__s64 declaration on 32bit targets. GCC can be made to warn about usage of long long types with ISO C90 (-ansi), but only with -pedantic. You can write this in a way that even then it doesn't cause warnings, namely by: #ifdef __GNUC__ __extension__ typedef __signed__ long long __s64; __extension__ typedef unsigned long long __u64; #endif The __extension__ keyword in front of this switches off any pedantic warnings for this expression. * Introduce compat_u64 and compat_s64 typesArnd Bergmann2007-07-161-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One common problem with 32 bit system call and ioctl emulation is the different alignment rules between i386 and 64 bit machines. A number of drivers work around this by marking the compat structures as 'attribute((packed))', which is not the right solution because it breaks all the non-x86 architectures that want to use the same compat code. Hopefully, this patch improves the situation, it introduces two new types, compat_u64 and compat_s64. These are defined on all architectures to have the same size and alignment as the 32 bit version of u64 and s64. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Acked-by: David S. * Introduce O_CLOEXECUlrich Drepper2007-07-161-14/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The problem is as follows: in multi-threaded code (or more correctly: all code using clone() with CLONE_FILES) we have a race when exec'ing. thread #1 thread #2 fd=open() fork + exec fcntl(fd,F_SETFD,FD_CLOEXEC) In some applications this can happen frequently. Take a web browser. One thread opens a file and another thread starts, say, an external PDF viewer. The result can even be a security issue if that open file descriptor refers to a sensitive file and the external program can somehow be tricked into using that descriptor. Just adding O_CLOEXEC support to open() doesn't solve the whole set of problems. There are other ways to create file descriptors (socket, epoll_create, Unix domain socket transfer, etc). These can and should be addressed separately though. open() is such an easy case that it makes not much sense putting the fix off. The test program: #include <errno.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #ifndef O_CLOEXEC # define O_CLOEXEC 02000000 #endif int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { int fd; if (argc > 1) { fd = atol (argv[1]); printf ("child: fd = %d\n", fd); if (fcntl (fd, F_GETFD) == 0 || errno != EBADF) { puts ("file descriptor valid in child"); return 1; } return 0; } fd = open ("/proc/self/exe", O_RDONLY | O_CLOEXEC); printf ("in parent: new fd = %d\n", fd); char buf[20]; snprintf (buf, sizeof (buf), "%d", fd); execl ("/proc/self/exe", argv[0], buf, NULL); puts ("execl failed"); return 1; } [kyle@parisc-linux.org: parisc fix] Signed-off-by: Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> Acked-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org> Acked-by: David S. * Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan2007-05-212-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). Cross-compile tested on all arm defconfigs, all mips defconfigs, all powerpc defconfigs, alpha alpha-up arm i386 i386-up i386-defconfig i386-allnoconfig ia64 ia64-up m68k mips parisc parisc-up powerpc powerpc-up s390 s390-up sparc sparc-up sparc64 sparc64-up um-x86_64 x86_64 x86_64-up x86_64-defconfig x86_64-allnoconfig as well as my two usual configs. | | | | | | | | | | | | | These files are almost all the same. * atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers2007-05-081-16/+31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. * Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson2007-05-081-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. This patch removes the redundant macros from all architectures except sparc and sparc64.
