* rename thread_info to stackRoman Zippel2007-05-091-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This finally renames the thread_info field in task structure to stack, so that the assumptions about this field are gone and archs have more freedom about placing the thread_info structure. Nonbroken archs which have a proper thread pointer can do the access to both current thread and task structure via a single pointer. It'll allow for a few more cleanups of the fork code, from which e.g. ia64 could benefit. * Remove hardcoding of hard_smp_processor_id on UP systemsFernando Luis Vazquez Cao2007-05-091-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With the advent of kdump, the assumption that the boot CPU when booting an UP kernel is always the CPU with a particular hardware ID (often 0) (usually referred to as BSP on some architectures) is not valid anymore. The reason being that the dump capture kernel boots on the crashed CPU (the CPU that invoked crash_kexec), which may be or may not be that particular CPU. Move definition of hard_smp_processor_id for the UP case to architecture-specific code ("asm/smp.h") where it belongs, so that each architecture can provide its own implementation. * atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers2007-05-081-28/+31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. * atomic.h: add atomic64 cmpxchg, xchg and add_unless to alphaMathieu Desnoyers2007-05-081-3/+46
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This series mainly adds support for missing 64 bits cmpxchg and 64 bits atomic add unless. Therefore, principally 64 bits architectures are targeted by these patches. It also adds the complete list of atomic operations on the atomic_long type. * Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson2007-05-081-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. * move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig2007-05-081-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. | * [PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge2007-05-021-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function. * [PATCH] consolidate line discipline number definitionsTilman Schmidt2007-02-111-18/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The line discipline numbers N_* are currently defined for each architecture individually, but (except for a seeming mistake) identically, in asm/termios.h. There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be architecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios structure. The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h anyway. So I propose the following patch which moves the definitions of the individual line disciplines to linux/tty.h too. Three of these numbers (N_MASC, N_PROFIBUS_FDL, and N_SMSBLOCK) are unused in the current kernel, but the patch still keeps the complete set in case there are plans to use them yet. * [PATCH] tty: preparatory structures for termios revampAlan Cox2006-12-081-0/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In order to sort out our struct termios and add proper speed control we need to separate the kernel and user termios structures. Glibc is fine but the other libraries rely on the kernel exported struct termios and we need to extend this without breaking the ABI/API To do so we add a struct ktermios which is the kernel view of a termios structure and overlaps the struct termios with extra fields on the end for now. (That limitation will go away in later patches). Some platforms (eg alpha) planned ahead and thus use the same struct for both, others did not. This just adds the structures but does not use them, it seems a sensible splitting point for bisect if there are compile failures (not that I expect them) Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] rename the provided execve functions to kernel_execveArnd Bergmann2006-10-021-69/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some architectures provide an execve function that does not set errno, but instead returns the result code directly. Rename these to kernel_execve to get the right semantics there. Moreover, there is no reasone for any of these architectures to still provide __KERNEL_SYSCALLS__ or _syscallN macros, so remove these right away. * [PATCH] Directed yield: cpu_relax variants for spinlocks and rw-locksMartin Schwidefsky2006-10-011-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On systems running with virtual cpus there is optimization potential in regard to spinlocks and rw-locks. If the virtual cpu that has taken a lock is known to a cpu that wants to acquire the same lock it is beneficial to yield the timeslice of the virtual cpu in favour of the cpu that has the lock (directed yield). With CONFIG_PREEMPT="n" this can be implemented by the architecture without common code changes. Powerpc already does this. With CONFIG_PREEMPT="y" the lock loops are coded with _raw_spin_trylock, _raw_read_trylock and _raw_write_trylock in kernel/spinlock.c. If the lock could not be taken cpu_relax is called. A directed yield is not possible because cpu_relax doesn't know anything about the lock. To be able to yield the lock in favour of the current lock holder variants of cpu_relax for spinlocks and rw-locks are needed. The new _raw_spin_relax, _raw_read_relax and _raw_write_relax primitives differ from cpu_relax insofar that they have an argument: a pointer to the lock structure. * [PATCH] Standardize pxx_page macrosDave McCracken2006-09-262-4/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One of the changes necessary for shared page tables is to standardize the pxx_page macros. pte_page and pmd_page have always returned the struct page associated with their entry, while pte_page_kernel and pmd_page_kernel have returned the kernel virtual address. pud_page and pgd_page, on the other hand, return the kernel virtual address. Shared page tables needs pud_page and pgd_page to return the actual page structures. There are very few actual users of these functions, so it is simple to standardize their usage. Since this is basic cleanup, I am submitting these changes as a standalone patch. Per Hugh Dickins' comments about it, I am also changing the pxx_page_kernel macros to pxx_page_vaddr to clarify their meaning. | * [PATCH] Fix 'make headers_check' for AlphaDavid Woodhouse2006-09-163-4/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Alpha currently fails 'make headers_check' in the 2.6.18-rc kernels. This patch fixes it, by moving the existing #ifdef __KERNEL__ in asm/page.h so that it covers everything that userspace shouldn't so, and by adding asm/compiler.h to the list of exported files so that its use within asm/byteorder.h is successful. [ Note that at least with GCC 4, <linux/compiler.h> doesn't do the forced inlining about which there are nasty comments (and a workaround) in <asm/compiler.h>, unless you set CONFIG_FORCED_INLINING. Rather than keep the mess you have in <asm/compiler.h> you could perhaps just make sure CONFIG_FORCED_INLINING=n is also honoured with GCC3, and make sure it cannot be set for Alpha? ] Signed-off-by: David Woodhouse <dwmw2@infradead.org> Cc: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Cc: Ivan Kokshaysky <ink@jurassic.park.msu.ru> Cc: Richard Henderson <rth@twiddle.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* | [PATCH] libata: rework legacy handling to remove much of the cruftAlan Cox2006-08-101-0/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Kill host_set->next Fix simplex support Allow per platform setting of IDE legacy bases Some of this can be tidied further later on, in particular all the legacy port gunge belongs as a PCI quirk/PCI header decode to understand the special legacy IDE rules in the PCI spec. Longer term Jeff also wants to move the request_irq/free_irq out of core which will make this even cleaner. tj: folded in three followup patches - ata_piix-fix, broken-arch-fix and fix-new-legacy-handling, and separated per-dev xfermask into separate patch preceding this one. Folded in fixes are... * ata_piix-fix: fix build failure due to host_set->next removal * broken-arch-fix: add missing include/asm-*/libata-portmap.h * fix-new-legacy-handling: * In ata_pci_init_legacy_port(), probe_num was incorrectly incremented during initialization of the secondary port and probe_ent->n_ports was incorrectly fixed to 1. * Both legacy ports ended up having the same hard_port_no. * When printing port information, both legacy ports printed the first irq. * [PATCH] remove set_wmb - arch removalSteven Rostedt2006-07-141-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | set_wmb should not be used in the kernel because it just confuses the code more and has no benefit. Since it is not currently used in the kernel this patch removes it so that new code does not include it. All archs define set_wmb(var, value) to do { var = value; wmb(); } while(0) except ia64 and sparc which use a mb() instead. But this is still moot since it is not used anyway. Hasn't been tested on any archs but x86 and x86_64 (and only compiled tested) Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
