* xfs: remove subdirectoriesChristoph Hellwig2011-08-121-1556/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | Use the move from Linux 2.6 to Linux 3.x as an excuse to kill the annoying subdirectories in the XFS source code. Besides the large amount of file rename the only changes are to the Makefile, a few files including headers with the subdirectory prefix, and the binary sysctl compat code that includes a header under fs/xfs/ from kernel/. * xfs: preallocation transactions do not need to be synchronousDave Chinner2011-03-261-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Preallocation and hole punch transactions are currently synchronous and this is causing performance problems in some cases. The transactions don't need to be synchronous as we don't need to guarantee the preallocation is persistent on disk until a fdatasync, fsync, sync operation occurs. If the file is opened O_SYNC or O_DATASYNC, only then should the transaction be issued synchronously. * xfs: zero proper structure size for geometry callsAlex Elder2011-03-011-3/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 493f3358cb289ccf716c5a14fa5bb52ab75943e5 added this call to xfs_fs_geometry() in order to avoid passing kernel stack data back to user space: + memset(geo, 0, sizeof(*geo)); Unfortunately, one of the callers of that function passes the address of a smaller data type, cast to fit the type that xfs_fs_geometry() requires. As a result, this can happen: Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: f87aca93 Pid: 262, comm: xfs_fsr Not tainted 2.6.38-rc6-493f3358cb2+ #1 Call Trace: [<c12991ac>] ? panic+0x50/0x150 [<c102ed71>] ? __stack_chk_fail+0x10/0x18 [<f87aca93>] ? xfs_ioc_fsgeometry_v1+0x56/0x5d [xfs] Fix this by fixing that one caller to pass the right type and then copy out the subset it is interested in. * xfs: limit extsize to size of AGs and/or MAXEXTLENDave Chinner2011-01-281-2/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The extent size hint can be set to larger than an AG. This means that the alignment process can push the range to be allocated outside the bounds of the AG, resulting in assert failures or corrupted bmbt records. Similarly, if the extsize is larger than the maximum extent size supported, the alignment process will produce extents that are too large to fit into the bmbt records, resulting in a different type of assert/corruption failure. Fix this by limiting extsize at the time іt is set firstly to be less than MAXEXTLEN, then to be a maximum of half the size of the AGs in the filesystem for non-realtime inodes. Realtime inodes do not allocate out of AGs, so don't have to be restricted by the size of AGs. * xfs: Extend project quotas to support 32bit project idsArkadiusz Mi?kiewicz2010-10-181-7/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch adds support for 32bit project quota identifiers. On disk format is backward compatible with 16bit projid numbers. projid on disk is now kept in two 16bit values - di_projid_lo (which holds the same position as old 16bit projid value) and new di_projid_hi (takes existing padding) and converts from/to 32bit value on the fly. xfs_admin (for existing fs), mkfs.xfs (for new fs) needs to be used to enable PROJID32BIT support. * xfs: don't use vfs writeback for pure metadata modificationsDave Chinner2010-10-181-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Under heavy multi-way parallel create workloads, the VFS struggles to write back all the inodes that have been changed in age order. The bdi flusher thread becomes CPU bound, spending 85% of it's time in the VFS code, mostly traversing the superblock dirty inode list to separate dirty inodes old enough to flush. We already keep an index of all metadata changes in age order - in the AIL - and continued log pressure will do age ordered writeback without any extra overhead at all. If there is no pressure on the log, the xfssyncd will periodically write back metadata in ascending disk address offset order so will be very efficient. Hence we can stop marking VFS inodes dirty during transaction commit or when changing timestamps during transactions. This will keep the inodes in the superblock dirty list to those containing data or unlogged metadata changes. However, the timstamp changes are slightly more complex than this - there are a couple of places that do unlogged updates of the timestamps, and the VFS need to be informed of these. Hence add a new function xfs_trans_ichgtime() for transactional changes, and leave xfs_ichgtime() for the non-transactional changes. * xfs: Introduce XFS_IOC_ZERO_RANGEDave Chinner2010-10-181-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | XFS_IOC_ZERO_RANGE is the equivalent of an atomic XFS_IOC_UNRESVSP/ XFS_IOC_RESVSP call pair. It enabled ranges of written data to be turned into zeroes without requiring IO or having to free and reallocate the extents in the range given as would occur if we had to punch and then preallocate them separately. This enables applications to zero parts of files very quickly without changing the layout of the files in any way. | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently on-disk structure is able to keep only 16bit project quota id, so disallow 32bit ones. * xfs: simplify inode to transaction joiningChristoph Hellwig2010-07-261-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently we need to either call IHOLD or xfs_trans_ihold on an inode when joining it to a transaction via xfs_trans_ijoin. This patches instead makes xfs_trans_ijoin usable on it's own by doing an implicity xfs_trans_ihold, which also allows us to drop the third argument. For the case where we want to hold a reference on the inode a xfs_trans_ijoin_ref wrapper is added which does the IHOLD and marks the inode for needing an xfs_iput. In addition to the cleaner interface to the caller this also simplifies the implementation. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Reviewed-by: Dave Chinner <dchinner@redhat.com>

* include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable all xfs trace channels by: echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one event subdirectory, e.g. echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt all this is desctribed in more detail. To reads the events do a cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new tracing facility also employ. This allows a very fine-grained control of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter, allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various spots in XFS. Take a look at http://lwn.net/Articles/346470/ for some examples. Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to deliver it later. * xfs: fix dentry aliasing issues in open_by_handleChristoph Hellwig2009-01-191-168/+137
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Open by handle just grabs an inode by handle and then creates itself a dentry for it. While this works for regular files it is horribly broken for directories, where the VFS locking relies on the fact that there is only just one single dentry for a given inode, and that these are always connected to the root of the filesystem so that it's locking algorithms work (see Documentations/filesystems/Locking) Remove all the existing open by handle code and replace it with a small wrapper around the exportfs code which deals with all these issues. At the same time we also make the checks for a valid handle strict enough to reject all not perfectly well formed handles - given that we never hand out others that's okay and simplifies the code. This also fixes xfs_compat_ioc_fsgeometry_v1(), which had it backwards before; it copied in an (empty) arg, then copied out the native result, which probably corrupted userspace. It should be translating on the copyout. Also, a bit of formatting cleanup for consistency, and conversion of all error returns to use XFS_ERROR(). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Preliminary work to hook up fiemap, this allows us to pass in an arbitrary formatter to copy extent data back to userspace. The formatter takes info for 1 extent, a pointer to the user "thing*" and a pointer to a "filled" variable to indicate whether a userspace buffer did get filled in (for fiemap, hole "extents" are skipped). I'm just using the getbmapx struct as a "common denominator" because as far as I can see, it holds all info that any formatters will care about. ("*thing" because fiemap doesn't pass the user pointer around, but rather has a pointer to a fiemap info structure, and helpers associated with it) Signed-off-by: Eric Sandeen <sandeen@sandeen.net> Reviewed-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Niv Sardi <xaiki@sgi.com>

Also move the ATTR_OP_* defines xfs_attr.h into the struct xfs_attr_multiop defintion in xfs_fs.h because they are only used with that structure, and are part of the user ABI for the XFS_IOC_ATTRMULTI_BY_HANDLE ioctl.
