* mm + fs: store shadow entries in page cacheJohannes Weiner2014-04-031-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Reclaim will be leaving shadow entries in the page cache radix tree upon evicting the real page. As those pages are found from the LRU, an iput() can lead to the inode being freed concurrently. At this point, reclaim must no longer install shadow pages because the inode freeing code needs to ensure the page tree is really empty. Add an address_space flag, AS_EXITING, that the inode freeing code sets under the tree lock before doing the final truncate. Reclaim will check for this flag before installing shadow pages. * Don't pass inode to ->d_hash() and ->d_compare()Linus Torvalds2013-06-291-8/+24
| | | | | | | | | | | | Instances either don't look at it at all (the majority of cases) or only want it to find the superblock (which can be had as dentry->d_sb). A few cases that want more are actually safe with dentry->d_inode - the only precaution needed is the check that it hadn't been replaced with NULL by rmdir() or by overwriting rename(), which case should be simply treated as cache miss. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1d2ef5901483004d74947bbf78d5146c24038fe7 caused a regression in ncpfs such that directories could no longer be removed. This was because ncp_rmdir checked to see if a dentry could be unhashed before allowing it to be removed. Since 1d2ef5901483004d74947bbf78d5146c24038fe7 introduced a change that incremented dentry->d_count causing it to always be greater than 1 unhash would always fail. Thus causing the error path in ncp_rmdir to always be taken. Removing this error path is safe as unhashing is still accomplished by calls to dput from vfs_rmdir. * fs: Limit sys_mount to only request filesystem modules.Eric W. Biederman2013-03-031-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-" and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules to match. A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel. Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially making things safer with no real cost. Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe, well understood work-arounds to known problematic software. This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module autofs4. This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module. After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module() without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep. Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT, which most filesystems do not set today. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle, there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)." Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file() interface ("take descriptor handling from sock_alloc_file() to callers" vs "net: Providing protocol type via system.sockprotoname xattr of /proc/PID/fd entries" adding a dentry name to the socket) * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (72 commits) MAX_LFS_FILESIZE should be a loff_t compat: fs: Generic compat_sys_sendfile implementation fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystems btrfs: reada_extent doesn't need kref for refcount coredump: move core dump functionality into its own file coredump: prevent double-free on an error path in core dumper usb/gadget: fix misannotations fcntl: fix misannotations ceph: don't abuse d_delete() on failure exits hypfs: ->d_parent is never NULL or negative vfs: delete surplus inode NULL check switch simple cases of fget_light to fdget new helpers: fdget()/fdput() switch o2hb_region_dev_write() to fget_light() proc_map_files_readdir(): don't bother with grabbing files make get_file() return its argument vhost_set_vring(): turn pollstart/pollstop into bool switch prctl_set_mm_exe_file() to fget_light() switch xfs_find_handle() to fget_light() switch xfs_swapext() to fget_light() ...
| * fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystemsKirill A. Shutemov2012-10-021-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every deactivate_locked_super(). * fs: introduce inode operation ->update_timeJosef Bacik2012-06-011-2/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs has to make sure we have space to allocate new blocks in order to modify the inode, so updating time can fail. We've gotten around this by having our own file_update_time but this is kind of a pain, and Christoph has indicated he would like to make xfs do something different with atime updates. So introduce ->update_time, where we will deal with i_version an a/m/c time updates and indicate which changes need to be made. The normal version just does what it has always done, updates the time and marks the inode dirty, and then filesystems can choose to do something different. I've gone through all of the users of file_update_time and made them check for errors with the exception of the fault code since it's complicated and I wasn't quite sure what to do there, also Jan is going to be pushing the file time updates into page_mkwrite for those who have it so that should satisfy btrfs and make it not a big deal to check the file_update_time() return code in the generic fault path. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. "pgfault" "pgmajfault" They are different from "pgpgin"/"pgpgout" stat which count number of pages charged/discharged to the cgroup and have no meaning of reading/ writing page to disk. It is valuable to track the two stats for both measuring application's performance as well as the efficiency of the kernel page reclaim path. Counting pagefaults per process is useful, but we also need the aggregated value since processes are monitored and controlled in cgroup basis in memcg. Functional test: check the total number of pgfault/pgmajfault of all memcgs and compare with global vmstat value: $ cat /proc/vmstat | grep fault pgfault 1070751 pgmajfault 553 $ cat /dev/cgroup/memory.stat | grep fault pgfault 1071138 pgmajfault 553 total_pgfault 1071142 total_pgmajfault 553 $ cat /dev/cgroup/A/memory.stat | grep fault pgfault 199 pgmajfault 0 total_pgfault 199 total_pgmajfault 0 Performance test: run page fault test(pft) wit 16 thread on faulting in 15G anon pages in 16G container. There is no regression noticed on the "flt/cpu/s" Sample output from pft: TAG pft:anon-sys-default: Gb Thr CLine User System Wall flt/cpu/s fault/wsec 15 16 1 0.67s 233.41s 14.76s 16798.546 266356.260 +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ N Min Max Median Avg Stddev x 10 16682.962 17344.027 16913.524 16928.812 166.5362 + 10 16695.568 16923.896 16820.604 16824.652 84.816568 No difference proven at 95.0% confidence [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix build] [hughd@google.com: shmem fix] Signed-off-by: Ying Han <yinghan@google.com> Acked-by: KAMEZAWA Hiroyuki <kamezawa.hiroyu@jp.fujitsu.com> Cc: KOSAKI Motohiro <kosaki.motohiro@jp.fujitsu.com> Reviewed-by: Minchan Kim <minchan.kim@gmail.com> Cc: Daisuke Nishimura <nishimura@mxp.nes.nec.co.jp> Acked-by: Balbir Singh <balbir@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We get this spurious warning: fs/ncpfs/inode.c: In function 'ncp_fill_super': fs/ncpfs/inode.c:451: warning: 'data.mounted_vol[1u]' may be used uninitialized in this function fs/ncpfs/inode.c:451: warning: 'data.mounted_vol[2u]' may be used uninitialized in this function fs/ncpfs/inode.c:451: warning: 'data.mounted_vol[3u]' may be used uninitialized in this function ... It's notabug, but we can easily fix it with a memset().
