* ->encode_fh() API changeAl Viro2012-05-291-5/+4

* vfs: Rename end_writeback() to clear_inode()Jan Kara2012-05-061-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | After we moved inode_sync_wait() from end_writeback() it doesn't make sense to call the function end_writeback() anymore. Rename it to clear_inode() which well says what the function really does - set I_CLEAR flag. Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Fengguang Wu <fengguang.wu@intel.com>
* fat: fix bug in enforcing Long File Name lengthNamjae Jeon2012-03-231-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Since '*outlen' is initialized to zero, it is currently possible to create a filename of length (FAT_LFN_LEN + 1) when utf8 is not enabled. To enforce the FAT_LFN_LEN limit, we must perform one less iteration. * fat: clean up xlate_to_uni()Namjae Jeon2012-03-231-47/+36
| | | | | | | | | | | | | xlate_to_uni() is called by vfat_build_slots() with sbi->nls_io as the final argument. nls_io can never be null at this point because the check is already being done in fat_fill_super() wherein the mount fails if it is null. | * NLS: improve UTF8 -> UTF16 string conversion routineAlan Stern2011-11-181-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The utf8s_to_utf16s conversion routine needs to be improved. Unlike its utf16s_to_utf8s sibling, it doesn't accept arguments specifying the maximum length of the output buffer or the endianness of its 16-bit output. This patch (as1501) adds the two missing arguments, and adjusts the only two places in the kernel where the function is called. A follow-on patch will add a third caller that does utilize the new capabilities. The two conversion routines are still annoyingly inconsistent in the way they handle invalid byte combinations. But that's a subject for a different patch. Signed-off-by: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> CC: Clemens Ladisch <clemens@ladisch.de> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | FAT16 support maximum 4GB vol/file size with 64KB cluster size. Win NT/XP/7 increased the maximum cluster size to 64KB, and file/vol size increased 4GB also. Although increasing, the file size of linux FAT is still limited at 2GB. I found that it is limited by sb->maxbytes(0x7fffffff) when partition is formatted by FAT16. sb->s_maxbytes in fill_super should be set to 0xffffffff like fat32. * | fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlersJosef Bacik2011-07-202-3/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there. * | fs: simplify the blockdev_direct_IO prototypeChristoph Hellwig2011-07-201-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Simple filesystems always pass inode->i_sb_bdev as the block device argument, and never need a end_io handler. Let's simply things for them and for my grepping activity by dropping these arguments. The only thing not falling into that scheme is ext4, which passes and end_io handler without needing special flags (yet), but given how messy the direct I/O code there is use of __blockdev_direct_IO in one instead of two out of three cases isn't going to make a large difference anyway. * | fs: move inode_dio_wait calls into ->setattrChristoph Hellwig2011-07-201-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Let filesystems handle waiting for direct I/O requests themselves instead of doing it beforehand. This means filesystem-specific locks to prevent new dio referenes from appearing can be held. This is important to allow generalizing i_dio_count to non-DIO_LOCKING filesystems. Patched with: git grep -E '[.>]([[:space:]])*d_op([[:space:]])*=' | xargs sed -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)->d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\1, \2);/' -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)\.d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\&\1, \2);/' -i Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* fs: icache RCU free inodesNick Piggin2011-01-071-1/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>

* fs: change d_compare for rcu-walkNick Piggin2011-01-072-19/+28
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Change d_compare so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. This does put significant restrictions on what may be done from the callback, however there don't seem to have been any problems with in-tree fses. If some strange use case pops up that _really_ cannot cope with the rcu-walk rules, we can just add new rcu-unaware callbacks, which would cause name lookup to drop out of rcu-walk mode. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
