* switch ->create() to umode_tAl Viro2012-01-031-1/+1
| | | | | | | | vfs_create() ignores everything outside of 16bit subset of its mode argument; switching it to umode_t is obviously equivalent and it's the only caller of the method Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* switch vfs_mkdir() and ->mkdir() to umode_tAl Viro2012-01-031-1/+1
| | | | | | | vfs_mkdir() gets int, but immediately drops everything that might not fit into umode_t and that's the only caller of ->mkdir()... Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlersJosef Bacik2011-07-201-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there. * kill ->dir_notify()Al Viro2008-12-311-6/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | Remove the hopelessly misguided ->dir_notify(). The only instance (cifs) has been broken by design from the very beginning; the objects it creates are never destroyed, keep references to struct file they can outlive, nothing that could possibly evict them exists on close(2) path *and* no locking whatsoever is done to prevent races with close(), should the previous, er, deficiencies someday be dealt with. * iget: introduce a function to register iget failureDavid Howells2008-02-071-0/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | Introduce a function to register failure in an inode construction path. This includes marking the inode under construction as bad, unlocking it and releasing it. * sendfile: remove bad_sendfile() from bad_file_opsJens Axboe2007-07-101-7/+0

| | | | | | | | | | | | Remove includes of <linux/smp_lock.h> where it is not used/needed. Suggested by Al Viro. * [PATCH] mark struct inode_operations const 1Arjan van de Ven2007-02-121-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. * [PATCH] fix memory corruption from misinterpreted bad_inode_ops return valuesEric Sandeen2007-01-051-41/+289
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | CVE-2006-5753 is for a case where an inode can be marked bad, switching the ops to bad_inode_ops, which are all connected as: static int return_EIO(void) { return -EIO; } #define EIO_ERROR ((void *) (return_EIO)) static struct inode_operations bad_inode_ops = { .create = bad_inode_create ...etc... The problem here is that the void cast causes return types to not be promoted, and for ops such as listxattr which expect more than 32 bits of return value, the 32-bit -EIO is interpreted as a large positive 64-bit number, i.e. 0x00000000fffffffa instead of 0xfffffffa. This goes particularly badly when the return value is taken as a number of bytes to copy into, say, a user's buffer for example... I originally had coded up the fix by creating a return_EIO_<TYPE> macro for each return type, like this: static int return_EIO_int(void) { return -EIO; } #define EIO_ERROR_INT ((void *) (return_EIO_int)) static struct inode_operations bad_inode_ops = { .create = EIO_ERROR_INT, ...etc... but Al felt that it was probably better to create an EIO-returner for each actual op signature. Since so few ops share a signature, I just went ahead & created an EIO function for each individual file & inode op that returns a value. * [PATCH] Make most file operations structs in fs/ constArjan van de Ven2006-03-281-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is a conversion to make the various file_operations structs in fs/ const. Basically a regexp job, with a few manual fixups The goal is both to increase correctness (harder to accidentally write to shared datastructures) and reducing the false sharing of cachelines with things that get dirty in .data (while .rodata is nicely read only and thus cache clean) Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
