* mtd: nand: cafe: remove use of NAND_OWN_BUFFERSMasahiro Yamada2017-12-141-20/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This driver is the last/only user of NAND_OWN_BUFFERS. Boris suggested to remove this flag. Taking a closer look at this driver, it calls dma_alloc_coherent() for the concatenated area for the DMA bounce buffer + struct nand_buffers, but the latter does not need to be DMA-coherent; cafe_{write,read}_buf simply do memcpy() between buffers when usedma==1. Let's do dma_alloc_coherent() for the DMA bounce buffer in the front, and leave the nand_buffers allocation to nand_scan_tail(), then rip off NAND_OWN_BUFFERS. The magic number, 2112, is still mysterious (hard-coded writesize + oobsize ?), but this is not our main interest. I am keeping it. * mtd: nand: force drivers to explicitly send READ/PROG commandsBoris Brezillon2017-12-141-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The core currently send the READ0 and SEQIN+PAGEPROG commands in nand_do_read/write_ops(). This is inconsistent with ->read/write_oob[_raw]() hooks behavior which are expected to send these commands. There's already a flag (NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS) to inform the core that a specific controller wants to send the READ/SEQIN+PAGEPROG commands on its own, but it's an opt-in flag, and existing drivers are unlikely to be updated to pass it. Moreover, some controllers cannot dissociate the READ/PAGEPROG commands from the associated data transfer and ECC engine activation, and developers have to hack things in their ->cmdfunc() implementation to handle such complex cases, or have to accept the perf penalty of sending twice the same command. To address this problem we are planning on adding a new interface which is passed all information about a NAND operation (including the amount of data to transfer) and replacing all calls to ->cmdfunc() to calls to this new ->exec_op() hook. But, in order to do that, we need to have all ->cmdfunc() calls placed near their associated ->read/write_buf/byte() calls. Modify the core and relevant drivers to make NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS the default case, and remove this flag. * mtd: nand: provide several helpers to do common NAND operationsBoris Brezillon2017-12-141-11/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is part of the process of removing direct calls to ->cmdfunc() outside of the core in order to introduce a better interface to execute NAND operations. Here we provide several helpers and make use of them to remove all direct calls to ->cmdfunc(). This way, we can easily modify those helpers to make use of the new ->exec_op() interface when available. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We are planning to share more code between different NAND based devices (SPI NAND, OneNAND and raw NANDs), but before doing that we need to move the existing include/linux/mtd/nand.h file into include/linux/mtd/rawnand.h so we can later create a nand.h header containing all common structure and function prototypes. * mtd: nand: Make sure drivers not supporting SET/GET_FEATURES return -ENOTSUPPBoris Brezillon2017-05-301-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A lot of drivers are providing their own ->cmdfunc(), and most of the time this implementation does not support all possible NAND operations. But since ->cmdfunc() cannot return an error code, the core has no way to know that the operation it requested is not supported. This is a problem we cannot address for all kind of operations with the current design, but we can prevent these silent failures for the GET/SET FEATURES operation by overloading the default ->onfi_{set,get}_features() methods with one returning -ENOTSUPP. * mtd: nand: don't select chip in nand_chip's block_bad opArchit Taneja2016-03-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One of the arguments passed to struct nand_chip's block_bad op is 'getchip', which, if true, is supposed to get and select the nand device, and later unselect and release the device. This op is intended to be replaceable by drivers. The drivers shouldn't be responsible for selecting/unselecting chip. Like other ops, the chip should already be selected before the block_bad op is called. Remove the getchip argument from the block_bad op and nand_block_checkbad. Move the chip selection to nand_block_isbad, since it is the only caller to nand_block_checkbad which requires chip selection. Modify nand_block_bad (the default function for the op) such that it doesn't select the chip. Remove the getchip argument from the bad_block funcs in cafe_nand, diskonchip and docg4 drivers. | | | | | | | | | | | | | The ->priv field of the mtd_info object attached to a nand_chip device should point to the nand_chip device. The pxa and cafe drivers are assigning this field their own private structure, which works fine as long as the nand_chip field is the first one in the driver private struct but seems a bit fragile. * mtd: nand: pass page number to ecc->write_xxx() methodsBoris BREZILLON2015-10-131-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The ->read_xxx() methods are all passed the page number the NAND controller is supposed to read, but ->write_xxx() do not have such a parameter. This is a problem if we want to properly implement data scrambling/randomization in order to mitigate MLC sensibility to repeated pattern: to prevent bitflips in adjacent pages in the same block we need to avoid repeating the same pattern at the same offset in those pages, hence the randomizer/scrambler engine need to be passed the page value in order to adapt its seed accordingly. Moreover, adding the page parameter to the ->write_xxx() methods add some consistency to the current API. * mtd: nand: teach write_page and write_page_raw return an error codeJosh Wu2012-07-061-3/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There is an implemention of hardware ECC write page function which may return an error indication. For instance, using Atmel HW PMECC to write one page into a nand flash, the hardware engine will compute the BCH ecc code for this page. so we need read a the status register to theck whether the ecc code is generated. But we cannot assume the status register always can be ready, for example, incorrect hardware configuration or hardware issue, in such case we need write_page() to return a error code. Since the definition of 'write_page' function in struct nand_ecc_ctrl is 'void'. So this patch will: 1. add return 'int' value for 'write_page' function. 2. to be consitent, add return 'int' value for 'write_page_raw' fuctions too. 3. add code to test the return value, and if negative, indicate an error happend when write page with ECC. 4. fix the compile warning in all impacted nand flash driver. * mtd: nand: add 'oob_required' argument to NAND {read,write}_page interfacesBrian Norris2012-05-131-5/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | New NAND controllers can perform read/write via HW engines which don't expose OOB data in their DMA mode. To reflect this, we should rework the nand_chip / nand_ecc_ctrl interfaces that assume that drivers will always read/write OOB data in the nand_chip.oob_poi buffer. A better interface includes a boolean argument that explicitly tells the callee when OOB data is requested by the calling layer (for reading/writing to/from nand_chip.oob_poi). This patch adds the 'oob_required' parameter to each relevant {read,write}_page interface; all 'oob_required' parameters are left unused for now. The next patch will set the parameter properly in the nand_base.c callers, and follow-up patches will make use of 'oob_required' in some of the callee functions. Note that currently, there is no harm in ignoring the 'oob_required' parameter and *always* utilizing nand_chip.oob_poi, but there can be performance/complexity/design benefits from avoiding filling oob_poi in the common case. I will try to implement this for some drivers which can be ported easily. Note: I couldn't compile-test all of these easily, as some had ARCH dependencies. | * mtd: nand: rename NAND_USE_FLASH_BBTBrian Norris2011-09-111-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Recall the recently added prefix requirements: * "NAND_" for flags in nand.h, used in nand_chip.options * "NAND_BBT_" for flags in bbm.h, used in nand_chip.bbt_options or in nand_bbt_descr.options Thus, I am changing NAND_USE_FLASH_BBT to NAND_BBT_USE_FLASH. Again, this flag is found in bbm.h and so should NOT be used in the "nand_chip.options" field. | * mtd: nand: consolidate redundant flash-based BBT flagsBrian Norris2011-09-111-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch works with the following three flags from two headers (nand.h and bbm.h): (1) NAND_USE_FLASH_BBT (nand.h) (2) NAND_USE_FLASH_BBT_NO_OOB (nand.h) (3) NAND_BBT_NO_OOB (bbm.h) These flags are all related and interdependent, yet they were in different headers. Flag (2) is simply the combination of (1) and (3) and can be eliminated. This patch accomplishes the following: * eliminate NAND_USE_FLASH_BBT_NO_OOB (i.e., flag (2)) * move NAND_USE_FLASH_BBT (i.e., flag (1)) to bbm.h It's important to note that because (1) and (3) are now both found in bbm.h, they should NOT be used in the "nand_chip.options" field. I removed a small section from the mtdnand DocBook because it referes to NAND_USE_FLASH_BBT in nand.h, which has been moved to bbm.h. | * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch.
