The pcommit instruction, which has not shipped on any product, is deprecated. Instead, the requirement is that platforms implement either ADR, or provide one or more flush addresses per nvdimm. ADR (Asynchronous DRAM Refresh) flushes data in posted write buffers to the memory controller on a power-fail event. Flush addresses are defined in ACPI 6.x as an NVDIMM Firmware Interface Table (NFIT) sub-structure: "Flush Hint Address Structure". A flush hint is an mmio address that when written and fenced assures that all previous posted writes targeting a given dimm have been flushed to media. - On-demand ARS (address range scrub). Linux uses the results of the ACPI ARS commands to track bad blocks in pmem devices. When latent errors are detected we re-scrub the media to refresh the bad block list, userspace can also request a re-scrub at any time. - Support for the Microsoft DSM (device specific method) command format. - Support for EDK2/OVMF virtual disk device memory ranges. - Various fixes and cleanups across the subsystem. * tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.8' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm: (41 commits) libnvdimm-btt: Delete an unnecessary check before the function call "__nd_device_register" nfit: do an ARS scrub on hitting a latent media error nfit: move to nfit/ sub-directory nfit, libnvdimm: allow an ARS scrub to be triggered on demand libnvdimm: register nvdimm_bus devices with an nd_bus driver pmem: clarify a debug print in pmem_clear_poison x86/insn: remove pcommit Revert "KVM: x86: add pcommit support" nfit, tools/testing/nvdimm/: unify shutdown paths libnvdimm: move ->module to struct nvdimm_bus_descriptor nfit: cleanup acpi_nfit_init calling convention nfit: fix _FIT evaluation memory leak + use after free tools/testing/nvdimm: add manufacturing_{date|location} dimm properties tools/testing/nvdimm: add virtual ramdisk range acpi, nfit: treat virtual ramdisk SPA as pmem region pmem: kill __pmem address space pmem: kill wmb_pmem() libnvdimm, pmem: use nvdimm_flush() for namespace I/O writes fs/dax: remove wmb_pmem() libnvdimm, pmem: flush posted-write queues on shutdown ...

* dm: refactor ioctl handlingChristoph Hellwig2015-10-311-7/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | This moves the call to blkdev_ioctl and the argument checking to DM core code, and only leaves a callout to find the block device to operate on in the targets. This simplifies the code and allows us to pass through ioctl-like command using other methods in the next patch. Also split out a helper around calling the prepare_ioctl method that will be reused for persistent reservation handling. | * dm: do not override error code returned from dm_get_device()Vivek Goyal2015-08-121-2/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some of the device mapper targets override the error code returned by dm_get_device() and return either -EINVAL or -ENXIO. There is nothing gained by this override. It is better to propagate the returned error code unchanged to caller. This work was motivated by hitting an issue where the underlying device was busy but -EINVAL was being returned. After this change we get -EBUSY instead and it is easier to figure out the problem. * dm: rename request variables to biosAlasdair G Kergon2013-03-011-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | Use 'bio' in the name of variables and functions that deal with bios rather than 'request' to avoid confusion with the normal block layer use of 'request'. No functional changes. Signed-off-by: Alasdair G Kergon <agk@redhat.com>
* dm: fix truncated status stringsMikulas Patocka2013-03-011-4/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Avoid returning a truncated table or status string instead of setting the DM_BUFFER_FULL_FLAG when the last target of a table fills the buffer. When processing a table or status request, the function retrieve_status calls ti->type->status. If ti->type->status returns non-zero, retrieve_status assumes that the buffer overflowed and sets DM_BUFFER_FULL_FLAG. However, targets don't return non-zero values from their status method on overflow. Most targets returns always zero. If a buffer overflow happens in a target that is not the last in the table, it gets noticed during the next iteration of the loop in retrieve_status; but if a buffer overflow happens in the last target, it goes unnoticed and erroneously truncated data is returned. In the current code, the targets behave in the following way: * dm-crypt returns -ENOMEM if there is not enough space to store the key, but it returns 0 on all other overflows. * dm-thin returns errors from the status method if a disk error happened. This is incorrect because retrieve_status doesn't check the error code, it assumes that all non-zero values mean buffer overflow. * all the other targets always return 0. This patch changes the ti->type->status function to return void (because most targets don't use the return code). Overflow is detected in retrieve_status: if the status method fills up the remaining space completely, it is assumed that buffer overflow happened. * dm thin: commit before gathering statusAlasdair G Kergon2012-07-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit outstanding metadata before returning the status for a dm thin pool so that the numbers reported are as up-to-date as possible. The commit is not performed if the device is suspended or if the DM_NOFLUSH_FLAG is supplied by userspace and passed to the target through a new 'status_flags' parameter in the target's dm_status_fn. The userspace dmsetup tool will support the --noflush flag with the 'dmsetup status' and 'dmsetup wait' commands from version 1.02.76 onwards. * dm: reject trailing characters in sccanf inputMikulas Patocka2012-03-281-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Device mapper uses sscanf to convert arguments to numbers. The problem is that the way we use it ignores additional unmatched characters in the scanned string. For example, this `if (sscanf(string, "%d", &number) == 1)' will match a number, but also it will match number with some garbage appended, like "123abc". As a result, device mapper accepts garbage after some numbers. For example the command `dmsetup create vg1-new --table "0 16384 linear 254:1bla 34816bla"' will pass without an error. This patch fixes all sscanf uses in device mapper. It appends "%c" with a pointer to a dummy character variable to every sscanf statement. The construct `if (sscanf(string, "%d%c", &number, &dummy) == 1)' succeeds only if string is a null-terminated number (optionally preceded by some whitespace characters). If there is some character appended after the number, sscanf matches "%c", writes the character to the dummy variable and returns 2. We check the return value for 1 and consequently reject numbers with some garbage appended. * dm: linear support discardMike Snitzer2010-08-121-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Allow discards to be passed through to linear mappings if at least one underlying device supports it. Discards will be forwarded only to devices that support them. A target that supports discards should set num_discard_requests to indicate how many times each discard request must be submitted to it. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Incorrect device area lengths are being passed to device_area_is_valid(). The regression appeared in 2.6.31-rc1 through commit 754c5fc7ebb417b23601a6222a6005cc2e7f2913. With the dm-stripe target, the size of the target (ti->len) was used instead of the stripe_width (ti->len/#stripes). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Implement barrier support for single device DM devices This patch implements barrier support in DM for the common case of dm linear just remapping a single underlying device. In this case we can safely pass the barrier through because there can be no reordering between devices. NB. Any DM device might cease to support barriers if it gets reconfigured so code must continue to allow for a possible -EOPNOTSUPP on every barrier bio submitted. - agk Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Mikulas Patocka <mpatocka@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Alasdair G Kergon <agk@redhat.com>
* dm: consolidate target deregistration error handlingMikulas Patocka2009-01-061-4/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change dm_unregister_target to return void and use BUG() for error reporting. dm_unregister_target can only fail because of programming bug in the target driver. It can't fail because of user's behavior or disk errors. This patch changes unregister_target to return void and use BUG if someone tries to unregister non-registered target or unregister target that is in use. This patch removes code duplication (testing of error codes in all dm targets) and reports bugs in just one place, in dm_unregister_target. In some target drivers, these return codes were ignored, which could lead to a situation where bugs could be missed. * [PATCH] dm: support ioctls on mapped devices: fix with fake fileMilan Broz2006-10-031-1/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The new ioctl code passes the wrong file pointer to the underlying device. No file pointer is available so make a temporary fake one. ioctl_by_bdev() does set_fs(KERNEL_DS) so it's for ioctls originating within the kernel and unsuitable here. We are processing ioctls that originated in userspace and mapping them to different devices. Fixing the existing callers that pass a NULL file struct and consolidating the fake_file users are separate matters to solve in later patches. * [PATCH] dm: export blkdev_driver_ioctlAlasdair G Kergon2006-10-031-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Export blkdev_driver_ioctl for device-mapper. If we get as far as the device-mapper ioctl handler, we know the ioctl is not a standard block layer BLK* one, so we don't need to check for them a second time and can call blkdev_driver_ioctl() directly. * [PATCH] dm linear: support ioctlsMilan Broz2006-10-031-1/+12
| | | | | | | | | | | | When an ioctl is performed on a device with a linear target, simply pass it on to the underlying block device. Note that the ioctl will pass through the filtering in blkdev_ioctl() twice. * [PATCH] dm: remove SECTOR_FORMATAndrew Morton2006-03-271-3/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | We don't know what type sector_t has. Sometimes it's unsigned long, sometimes it's unsigned long long. For example on ppc64 it's unsigned long with CONFIG_LBD=n and on x86_64 it's unsigned long long with CONFIG_LBD=n. The way to handle all of this is to always use unsigned long long and to always typecast the sector_t when printing it. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
