* block: Kill bio_segments()/bi_vcnt usageKent Overstreet2013-11-231-4/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When we start sharing biovecs, keeping bi_vcnt accurate for splits is going to be error prone - and unnecessary, if we refactor some code. So bio_segments() has to go - but most of the existing users just needed to know if the bio had multiple segments, which is easier - add a bio_multiple_segments() for them. (Two of the current uses of bio_segments() are going to go away in a couple patches, but the current implementation of bio_segments() is unsafe as soon as we start doing driver conversions for immutable biovecs - so implement a dumb version for bisectability, it'll go away in a couple patches) Signed-off-by: Kent Overstreet <kmo@daterainc.com> Cc: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> Cc: Neil Brown <neilb@suse.de> Cc: Nagalakshmi Nandigama <Nagalakshmi.Nandigama@lsi.com> Cc: Sreekanth Reddy <Sreekanth.Reddy@lsi.com> Cc: "James E.J. * block: Convert bio_for_each_segment() to bvec_iterKent Overstreet2013-11-231-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | More prep work for immutable biovecs - with immutable bvecs drivers won't be able to use the biovec directly, they'll need to use helpers that take into account bio->bi_iter.bi_bvec_done. This updates callers for the new usage without changing the implementation yet. | * block: deprecate barrier and replace blk_queue_ordered() with blk_queue_flush()Tejun Heo2010-09-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Barrier is deemed too heavy and will soon be replaced by FLUSH/FUA requests. Deprecate barrier. All REQ_HARDBARRIERs are failed with -EOPNOTSUPP and blk_queue_ordered() is replaced with simpler blk_queue_flush(). blk_queue_flush() takes combinations of REQ_FLUSH and FUA. If a device has write cache and can flush it, it should set REQ_FLUSH. If the device can handle FUA writes, it should also set REQ_FUA. All blk_queue_ordered() users are converted. * ORDERED_DRAIN is mapped to 0 which is the default value. * ORDERED_DRAIN_FLUSH is mapped to REQ_FLUSH. * ORDERED_DRAIN_FLUSH_FUA is mapped to REQ_FLUSH | REQ_FUA. * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. With SATA 4KB drives coming out that will no longer be the case. The sector size will be 4KB but the logical block size will remain 512-bytes. * block: implement and enforce request peek/start/fetchTejun Heo2009-05-111-3/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Till now block layer allowed two separate modes of request execution. A request is always acquired from the request queue via elv_next_request(). After that, drivers are free to either dequeue it or process it without dequeueing. Dequeue allows elv_next_request() to return the next request so that multiple requests can be in flight. Executing requests without dequeueing has its merits mostly in allowing drivers for simpler devices which can't do sg to deal with segments only without considering request boundary. However, the benefit this brings is dubious and declining while the cost of the API ambiguity is increasing. Segment based drivers are usually for very old or limited devices and as converting to dequeueing model isn't difficult, it doesn't justify the API overhead it puts on block layer and its more modern users. Previous patches converted all block low level drivers to dequeueing model. This patch completes the API transition by... * renaming elv_next_request() to blk_peek_request() * renaming blkdev_dequeue_request() to blk_start_request() * adding blk_fetch_request() which is combination of peek and start * disallowing completion of queued (not started) requests * applying new API to all LLDs Renamings are for consistency and to break out of tree code so that it's apparent that out of tree drivers need updating. * ps3disk: dequeue in-flight requestTejun Heo2009-05-111-3/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Other than in issue error paths, ps3disk always completely finishes fetched requests. With full completion on error paths, it can be easily converted to dequeueing model. * After L1 r/w call failure, ps3disk_submit_request_sg() now fails the whole request. Issue failure isn't likely to benefit from partial retry anyway and ps3disk uses full failure in completion error path too, so I don't think this amounts to any meaningful functionality loss. * flush completion is converted to _all for consistency. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Implement accessors - blk_rq_pos(), blk_rq_sectors() and blk_rq_cur_sectors() which return rq->hard_sector, rq->hard_nr_sectors and rq->hard_cur_sectors respectively and convert direct references of the said fields to the accessors. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | end_request() has been kept around for backward compatibility; however, it's about time for it to go away. * There aren't too many users left. * Its use of @updtodate is pretty confusing. * In some cases, newer code ends up using mixture of end_request() and [__]blk_end_request[_all](), which is way too confusing. So, add [__]blk_end_request_cur() and replace end_request() with it. Most conversions are straightforward. Noteworthy ones are... * paride/pcd: next_request() updated to take 0/-errno instead of 1/0. * paride/pf: pf_end_request() and next_request() updated to take 0/-errno instead of 1/0. * xd: xd_readwrite() updated to return 0/-errno instead of 1/0. * mtd/mtd_blkdevs: blktrans_discard_request() updated to return 0/-errno instead of 1/0. * block: don't depend on consecutive minor spaceTejun Heo2008-10-091-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | * Implement disk_devt() and part_devt() and use them to directly access devt instead of computing it from ->major and ->first_minor. Note that all references to ->major and ->first_minor outside of block layer is used to determine devt of the disk (the part0) and as ->major and ->first_minor will continue to represent devt for the disk, converting these users aren't strictly necessary. However, convert them for consistency. * Implement disk_max_parts() to avoid directly deferencing genhd->minors. * Update bdget_disk() such that it doesn't assume consecutive minor space. * Move devt computation from register_disk() to add_disk() and make it the only one (all other usages use the initially determined value). These changes clean up the code and will help disk->part dereference fix and extended block device numbers. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>

* block: no need to initialize rq->cmd in prepare_flush_fn hookFUJITA Tomonori2008-04-291-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The block layer initializes rq->cmd (queue_flush calls rq_init) so prepare_flush_fn hooks don't need to do that. The purpose of this patch is to remove sizeof(rq->cmd), as a preparation for large command support, which changes rq->cmd from the static array to a pointer. sizeof(rq->cmd) will not make sense. * ps3disk: Remove superfluous castGeert Uytterhoeven2008-04-291-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | As ps3disk is a ppc64-only driver, sector_t equals to unsigned long, and the cast is not needed. Reuse in another (possibly 32-bit) driver is protected by the safety net called `compiler warning' (with the cast, it may silently truncate to 32-bit). If sector_t ever changes, we will get a compiler warning as well (with the cast, we won't).
