* sched/headers: Prepare for new header dependencies before moving code to ↵Ingo Molnar2017-03-021-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | <linux/sched/debug.h> We are going to split <linux/sched/debug.h> out of <linux/sched.h>, which will have to be picked up from other headers and a couple of .c files. Create a trivial placeholder <linux/sched/debug.h> file that just maps to <linux/sched.h> to make this patch obviously correct and bisectable. Include the new header in the files that are going to need it. * parisc: Fix kernel crash with reversed copy_from_user()Helge Deller2016-04-081-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The kernel module testcase (lib/test_user_copy.c) exhibited a kernel crash on parisc if the parameters for copy_from_user were reversed ("illegal reversed copy_to_user" testcase). Fix this potential crash by checking the fault handler if the faulting address is in the exception table. * parisc: Panic immediately when panic_on_oopsAaro Koskinen2016-03-231-4/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | PA-RISC wants to sleep 5 seconds before panicking when panic_on_oops is set, with no apparent reason. Remove this feature, since some users may want their systems to fail as quickly as possible. Users who want to delay reboot after panic can use PANIC_TIMEOUT. * parisc: Initialize the fault vector earlier in the boot process.Helge Deller2015-11-221-20/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A fault vector on parisc needs to be 2K aligned. Furthermore the checksum of the fault vector needs to sum up to 0 which is being calculated and written at runtime. Up to now we aligned both PA20 and PA11 fault vectors on the same 4K page in order to easily write the checksum after having mapped the kernel read-only (by mapping this page only as read-write). But when we want to map the kernel text and data on huge pages this makes things harder. So, simplify it by aligning both fault vectors on 2K boundries and write the checksum before we map the page read-only. Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
* parisc: Fix some PTE/TLB race conditions and optimize __flush_tlb_range ↵John David Anglin2015-07-101-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | based on timing results The increased use of pdtlb/pitlb instructions seemed to increase the frequency of random segmentation faults building packages. Further, we had a number of cases where TLB inserts would repeatedly fail and all forward progress would stop. The Haskell ghc package caused a lot of trouble in this area. The final indication of a race in pte handling was this syslog entry on sibaris (C8000): swap_free: Unused swap offset entry 00000004 BUG: Bad page map in process mysqld pte:00000100 pmd:019bbec5 addr:00000000ec464000 vm_flags:00100073 anon_vma:0000000221023828 mapping: (null) index:ec464 CPU: 1 PID: 9176 Comm: mysqld Not tainted 4.0.0-2-parisc64-smp #1 Debian 4.0.5-1 Backtrace: [<0000000040173eb0>] show_stack+0x20/0x38 [<0000000040444424>] dump_stack+0x9c/0x110 [<00000000402a0d38>] print_bad_pte+0x1a8/0x278 [<00000000402a28b8>] unmap_single_vma+0x3d8/0x770 [<00000000402a4090>] zap_page_range+0xf0/0x198 [<00000000402ba2a4>] SyS_madvise+0x404/0x8c0 Note that the pte value is 0 except for the accessed bit 0x100. This bit shouldn't be set without the present bit. It should be noted that the madvise system call is probably a trigger for many of the random segmentation faults. In looking at the kernel code, I found the following problems: 1) The pte_clear define didn't take TLB lock when clearing a pte. 2) We didn't test pte present bit inside lock in exception support. 3) The pte and tlb locks needed to merged in order to ensure consistency between page table and TLB. This also has the effect of serializing TLB broadcasts on SMP systems. The attached change implements the above and a few other tweaks to try to improve performance. Based on the timing code, TLB purges are very slow (e.g., ~ 209 cycles per page on rp3440). Thus, I think it beneficial to test the split_tlb variable to avoid duplicate purges. Probably, all PA 2.0 machines have combined TLBs. I dropped using __flush_tlb_range in flush_tlb_mm as I realized all applications and most threads have a stack size that is too large to make this useful. I added some comments to this effect. Since implementing 1 through 3, I haven't had any random segmentation faults on mx3210 (rp3440) in about one week of building code and running as a Debian buildd. * mm/fault, arch: Use pagefault_disable() to check for disabled pagefaults in ↵David Hildenbrand2015-05-191-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | the handler Introduce faulthandler_disabled() and use it to check for irq context and disabled pagefaults (via pagefault_disable()) in the pagefault handlers. Please note that we keep the in_atomic() checks in place - to detect whether in irq context (in which case preemption is always properly disabled). In contrast, preempt_disable() should never be used to disable pagefaults. With !CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT, preempt_disable() doesn't modify the preempt counter, and therefore the result of in_atomic() differs. We validate that condition by using might_fault() checks when calling might_sleep(). Therefore, add a comment to faulthandler_disabled(), describing why this is needed. faulthandler_disabled() and pagefault_disable() are defined in linux/uaccess.h, so let's properly add that include to all relevant files. * parisc: fix interruption handler to respect pagefault_disable()Helge Deller2013-10-131-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Running an "echo t > /proc/sysrq-trigger" crashes the parisc kernel. The problem is, that in print_worker_info() we try to read the workqueue info via the probe_kernel_read() functions which use pagefault_disable() to avoid crashes like this: probe_kernel_read(&pwq, &worker->current_pwq, sizeof(pwq)); probe_kernel_read(&wq, &pwq->wq, sizeof(wq)); probe_kernel_read(name, wq->name, sizeof(name) - 1); The problem here is, that the first probe_kernel_read(&pwq) might return zero in pwq and as such the following probe_kernel_reads() try to access contents of the page zero which is read protected and generate a kernel segfault. With this patch we fix the interruption handler to call parisc_terminate() directly only if pagefault_disable() was not called (in which case preempt_count()==0). Otherwise we hand over to the pagefault handler which will try to look up the faulting address in the fixup tables. * dump_stack: unify debug information printed by show_regs()Tejun Heo2013-04-301-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | show_regs() is inherently arch-dependent but it does make sense to print generic debug information and some archs already do albeit in slightly different forms. This patch introduces a generic function to print debug information from show_regs() so that different archs print out the same information and it's much easier to modify what's printed. show_regs_print_info() prints out the same debug info as dump_stack() does plus task and thread_info pointers. * Archs which didn't print debug info now do. alpha, arc, blackfin, c6x, cris, frv, h8300, hexagon, ia64, m32r, metag, microblaze, mn10300, openrisc, parisc, score, sh64, sparc, um, xtensa * Already prints debug info. Replaced with show_regs_print_info(). The printed information is superset of what used to be there. arm, arm64, avr32, mips, powerpc, sh32, tile, unicore32, x86 * s390 is special in that it used to print arch-specific information along with generic debug info. Heiko and Martin think that the arch-specific extra isn't worth keeping s390 specfic implementation. Converted to use the generic version. Note that now all archs print the debug info before actual register dumps. * dump_stack: consolidate dump_stack() implementations and unify their behaviorsTejun Heo2013-04-301-8/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Both dump_stack() and show_stack() are currently implemented by each architecture. show_stack(NULL, NULL) dumps the backtrace for the current task as does dump_stack(). On some archs, dump_stack() prints extra information - pid, utsname and so on - in addition to the backtrace while the two are identical on other archs. The usages in arch-independent code of the two functions indicate show_stack(NULL, NULL) should print out bare backtrace while dump_stack() is used for debugging purposes when something went wrong, so it does make sense to print additional information on the task which triggered dump_stack(). There's no reason to require archs to implement two separate but mostly identical functions. It leads to unnecessary subtle information. This patch expands the dummy fallback dump_stack() implementation in lib/dump_stack.c such that it prints out debug information (taken from x86) and invokes show_stack(NULL, NULL) and drops arch-specific dump_stack() implementations in all archs except blackfin. Blackfin's dump_stack() does something wonky that I don't understand. Debug information can be printed separately by calling dump_stack_print_info() so that arch-specific dump_stack() implementation can still emit the same debug information. This is used in blackfin. This patch brings the following behavior changes. * On some archs, an extra level in backtrace for show_stack() could be printed. This is because the top frame was determined in dump_stack() on those archs while generic dump_stack() can't do that reliably. It can be compensated by inlining dump_stack() but not sure whether that'd be necessary. * Most archs didn't use to print debug info on dump_stack(). They do now. An example WARN dump follows. WARNING: at kernel/workqueue.c:4841 init_workqueues+0x35/0x505() Hardware name: empty Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ #9 0000000000000009 ffff88007c861e08 ffffffff81c614dc ffff88007c861e48 ffffffff8108f50f ffffffff82228240 0000000000000040 ffffffff8234a03c 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 ffff88007c861e58 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c614dc>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f50f>] warn_slowpath_common+0x7f/0xc0 [<ffffffff8108f56a>] warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 [<ffffffff8234a071>] init_workqueues+0x35/0x505 ... v2: CPU number added to the generic debug info as requested by s390 folks and dropped the s390 specific dump_stack(). This loses %ksp from the debug message which the maintainers think isn't important enough to keep the s390-specific dump_stack() implementation. dump_stack_print_info() is moved to kernel/printk.c from lib/dump_stack.c. Because linkage is per objecct file, dump_stack_print_info() living in the same lib file as generic dump_stack() means that archs which implement custom dump_stack() - at this point, only blackfin - can't use dump_stack_print_info() as that will bring in the generic version of dump_stack() too. v1 The v1 patch broke build on blackfin due to this issue. A simple testcase is available here: http://gsyprf10.external.hp.com/~deller/crash.tgz The problem is introduced by the fact, that the handle_interruption() crash handler calls the show_regs() function, which in turn tries to unwind the stack by calling parisc_show_stack(). Since the stack contains userspace addresses, a try to unwind the stack is dangerous and useless and leads to the crash. The fix is trivial: For userspace processes a) avoid to unwind the stack, and b) avoid to resolve userspace addresses to kernel symbol names. While touching this code, I converted print_symbol() to %pS printk formats and made parisc_show_stack() static. An initial patch for this was written by Kyle McMartin back in August: http://marc.info/?l=linux-parisc&m=121805168830283&w=2 Compile and run-tested with a 64bit parisc kernel. * [PARISC] clean up show_stackKyle McMartin2008-03-151-4/+21
| | | | | | | | When we show_regs, we obviously have a struct pt_regs of the calling frame. Use these in show_stack so we don't have the entire bogus call trace up to the show_stack call. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@mcmartin.ca>
* [PARISC] dump_stack in show_regsKyle McMartin2008-03-151-0/+2
| | | | | | | | Originally, show_stack was used in BUG() output. However, a recent commit changed it to print register state (no idea what that's supposed to help, really...) and parisc was missing a backtrace because of it. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>
* Use helpers to obtain task pid in printks (arch code)Alexey Dobriyan2007-10-191-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One of the easiest things to isolate is the pid printed in kernel log. There was a patch, that made this for arch-independent code, this one makes so for arch/xxx files. It took some time to cross-compile it, but hopefully these are all the printks in arch code. * Report that kernel is tainted if there was an OOPSPavel Emelianov2007-07-171-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | If the kernel OOPSed or BUGed then it probably should be considered as tainted. Thus, all subsequent OOPSes and SysRq dumps will report the tainted kernel. This saves a lot of time explaining oddities in the calltraces. * generic bug: use show_regs() instead of dump_stack()Heiko Carstens2007-07-161-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The current generic bug implementation has a call to dump_stack() in case a WARN_ON(whatever) gets hit. Since report_bug(), which calls dump_stack(), gets called from an exception handler we can do better: just pass the pt_regs structure to report_bug() and pass it to show_regs() in case of a warning. This will give more debug informations like register contents, etc... In addition this avoids some pointless lines that dump_stack() emits, since it includes a stack backtrace of the exception handler which is of no interest in case of a warning. E.g. on s390 the following lines are currently always present in a stack backtrace if dump_stack() gets called from report_bug(): [<000000000001517a>] show_trace+0x92/0xe8) [<0000000000015270>] show_stack+0xa0/0xd0 [<00000000000152ce>] dump_stack+0x2e/0x3c [<0000000000195450>] report_bug+0x98/0xf8 [<0000000000016cc8>] illegal_op+0x1fc/0x21c [<00000000000227d6>] sysc_return+0x0/0x10 Acked-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy@goop.org> Acked-by: Haavard Skinnemoen <hskinnemoen@atmel.com> Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Cc: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Paul Mundt <lethal@linux-sh.org> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

* [PARISC] Fix show_stack() when we can't kmallocMatthew Wilcox2007-02-171-9/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | show_stack() was calling kzalloc() to allocate a struct pt_regs. This meant that *really* early stack dumps would cause a null pointer dereference. x86_64 allocates its pt_regs on the stack, so do the same. Kyle actually committed this exact patch to CVS on Wed Jul 26 14:32:39 2006 UTC, and never moved it across to git. Bad Kyle. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
