| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Architectures implement dma_is_consistent() in different ways (some misinterpret the definition of API in DMA-API.txt). So it hasn't been so useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely out-of-tree drivers use the API. Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are definitely necessary for drivers. Let's remove this API. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dma_get_cache_alignment returns the minimum DMA alignment. Architectures defines it as ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN (formally ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN). So we can unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations. Note that some architectures implement dma_get_cache_alignment wrongly. dma_get_cache_alignment() should return the minimum DMA alignment. So fully-coherent architectures should return 1. This patch also fixes this issue. Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com: These are the changes needed for the kernel to support LINEMODE in the server. There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC. When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of what state the user wants the terminal to be in. New ioctl: TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the current process group of the pty. There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit. When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state. Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for any remote terminal protocol, including ssh. The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989. This seems to once in a while trip people up (the convention they are following is the one from kunmap()). Make it much harder to misuse, by moving it to level 9 on Rusty's list[4] ("The compiler/linker won't let you get it wrong"). This is done by refusing to build if the type of its first argument is a pointer to a struct page. The real kunmap_atomic() is renamed to kunmap_atomic_notypecheck() (which is what you would call in case for some strange reason calling it with a pointer to a struct page is not incorrect in your code). The previous version of this patch was compile tested on x86-64. [3] At least mips and powerpc look very similar, and sparc also seems to share a common ancestor with both; there seems to be quite some degree of copy-and-paste coding here. Roland said: The original thought there was that user_enable_single_step() et al might well be only an instruction or three on a sane machine (as if we have any of those!), and since there is only one call site inlining would be beneficial. But I agree that there is no strong reason to care about inlining it. As to the arch changes, there is only one thought I'd add to the record. It was always my thinking that for an arch where PTRACE_SINGLESTEP does text-modifying breakpoint insertion, user_enable_single_step() should not be provided. That is, arch_has_single_step()=>true means that there is an arch facility with "pure" semantics that does not have any unexpected side effects. Inserting a breakpoint might do very unexpected strange things in multi-threaded situations. Aside from that, it is a peculiar side effect that user_{enable,disable}_single_step() should cause COW de-sharing of text pages and so forth. For PTRACE_SINGLESTEP, all these peculiarities are the status quo ante for that arch, so having arch_ptrace() itself do those is one thing. But for building other things in the future, it is nicer to have a uniform "pure" semantics that arch-independent code can expect. OTOH, all such arch issues are really up to the arch maintainer. As of today, there is nothing but ptrace using user_enable_single_step() et al so it's a distinction without a practical difference. If/when there are other facilities that use user_enable_single_step() and might care, the affected arch's can revisit the question when someone cares about the quality of the arch support for said new facility. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages uncacheable. This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available for modification via update_mmu_cache(). Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to update_mmu_cache(): On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the pte_t? Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC: Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases, for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the _PAGE_EXEC. So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to suit. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While Linux provided an O_SYNC flag basically since day 1, it took until Linux 2.4.0-test12pre2 to actually get it implemented for filesystems, since that day we had generic_osync_around with only minor changes and the great "For now, when the user asks for O_SYNC, we'll actually give O_DSYNC" comment. This patch intends to actually give us real O_SYNC semantics in addition to the O_DSYNC semantics. After Jan's O_SYNC patches which are required before this patch it's actually surprisingly simple, we just need to figure out when to set the datasync flag to vfs_fsync_range and when not. This patch renames the existing O_SYNC flag to O_DSYNC while keeping it's numerical value to keep binary compatibility, and adds a new real O_SYNC flag. To guarantee backwards compatiblity it is defined as expanding to both the O_DSYNC and the new additional binary flag (__O_SYNC) to make sure we are backwards-compatible when compiled against the new headers. This also means that all places that don't care about the differences can just check O_DSYNC and get the right behaviour for O_SYNC, too - only places that actuall care need to check __O_SYNC in addition. Drivers and network filesystems have been updated in a fail safe way to always do the full sync magic if O_DSYNC is set. The few places setting O_SYNC for lower layers are kept that way for now to stay failsafe. We enforce that O_DSYNC is set when __O_SYNC is set early in the open path to make sure we always get these sane options. Note that parisc really screwed up their headers as they already define a O_DSYNC that has always been a no-op. We try to repair it by using it for the new O_DSYNC and redefinining O_SYNC to send both the traditional O_SYNC numerical value _and_ the O_DSYNC one.
