* x86: unification of i386 and x86_64 Kconfig.debugRandy Dunlap2007-10-251-88/+0
| | | | | | | | Adding proper dependencies so the two Kconfig.debug files are now identical and move the result file to x86. Signed-off-by: Randy Dunlap <randy.dunlap@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org>
* Replace CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND with CONFIG_HIBERNATIONRafael J. Wysocki2007-07-291-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | Replace CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND with CONFIG_HIBERNATION to avoid confusion (among other things, with CONFIG_SUSPEND introduced in the next patch). Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rjw@sisk.pl> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
* Allow DEBUG_RODATA and KPROBES to co-existArjan van de Ven2007-06-211-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Do not mark the kernel text read only if KPROBES is in the kernel; kprobes needs to hot-patch the kernel text to insert it's instrumentation. In this case, only mark the .rodata segment as read only. Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@linux.intel.com> Tested-by: S. P. * x86: Disable KPROBES with DEBUG_RODATA for nowAndi Kleen2007-06-201-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | Right now Kprobes cannot write to the write protected kernel text when DEBUG_RODATA is enabled. Disallow this in Kconfig for now. Temporary fix for 2.6.22. In .23 add code to temporarily unprotect it. Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
* [PATCH] i386: PARAVIRT: Remove CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRTJeremy Fitzhardinge2007-05-021-10/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRT. When inlining code, this option attempts to trash registers in the patch-site's "clobber" field, on the grounds that this should find bugs with incorrect clobbers. Unfortunately, the clobber field really means "registers modified by this patch site", which includes return values. Because of this, this option has outlived its usefulness, so remove it. * [PATCH] i386: Paravirt debug defaults offZachary Amsden2007-02-131-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | Deliberate register clobber around performance critical inline code is great for testing, bad to leave on by default. Many people ship with DEBUG_KERNEL turned on, so stop making DEBUG_PARAVIRT default on. Signed-off-by: Zachary Amsden <zach@vmware.com> Signed-off-by: Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de>
* [PATCH] paravirt: Patch inline replacements for paravirt interceptsRusty Russell2006-12-071-0/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It turns out that the most called ops, by several orders of magnitude, are the interrupt manipulation ops. These are obvious candidates for patching, so mark them up and create infrastructure for it. The method used is that the ops structure has a patch function, which is called for each place which needs to be patched: this returns a number of instructions (the rest are NOP-padded). Usually we can spare a register (%eax) for the binary patched code to use, but in a couple of critical places in entry.S we can't: we make the clobbers explicit at the call site, and manually clobber the allowed registers in debug mode as an extra check. And: Don't abuse CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL, add CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRT. And: AK: Fix warnings in x86-64 alternative.c build And: AK: Fix compilation with defconfig And: ^From: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Some binutlises still like to emit references to __stop_parainstructions and __start_parainstructions. And: AK: Fix warnings about unused variables when PARAVIRT is disabled. * [PATCH] lockdep: irqtrace subsystem, i386 supportIngo Molnar2006-07-031-0/+4
| | | | | | | | Add irqflags-tracing support to i386. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] lockdep: i386 remove multi entry backtracesIngo Molnar2006-07-031-9/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove CONFIG_STACK_BACKTRACE_COLS. This feature didnt work out: instead of making kernel debugging more efficient, it produces much harder to read stacktraces! Check out this trace for example: http://static.flickr.com/47/158326090_35d0129147_b_d.jpg That backtrace could have been printed much nicer as a one-entry-per-line thing, taking the same amount of screen real-estate. Plus we remove 30 lines of kernel code as well. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] kconfig: clarify memory debug optionsAndrew Morton2006-03-251-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The Kconfig text for CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB and CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC have always seemed a bit confusing. Change them to: CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB: "Debug slab memory allocations" CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC: "Debug page memory allocations" Cc: "David S. Miller" <davem@davemloft.net> Cc: Hirokazu Takata <takata@linux-m32r.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] x86: HUGETLBFS and DEBUG_PAGEALLOC are incompatibleChen, Kenneth W2006-03-251-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is not compatible with hugetlb page support. That debug option turns off PSE. Once it is turned off in CR4, the cpu will ignore pse bit in the pmd and causing infinite page-not- present faults. So disable DEBUG_PAGEALLOC if the user selected hugetlbfs. * [PATCH] i386: multi-column stack backtracesChuck Ebbert2006-03-231-0/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Print stack backtraces in multiple columns, saving screen space. Number of columns is configurable and defaults to one so behavior is backwards-compatible. Also removes the brackets around addresses when printing more that one entry per line so they print as: <address> instead of: [<address>] This helps multiple entries fit better on one line. Original idea by Dave Jones, taken from x86_64. * [PATCH] Move Kprobes and Oprofile to "Instrumentation Support" menuPrasanna S Panchamukhi2005-11-071-10/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Andrew Morton suggested to move kprobes from kernel hacking menu, since kernel hacking menu is in-appropriate for the Kprobes. This patch moves Kprobes and Oprofile under instrumentation menu. (akpm: it's not a natural fit, but things like djprobes and the s390 guys' statistics library need a home) Signed-of-by: Prasanna S Panchamukhi <prasanna@in.ibm.com> Cc: Philippe Elie <phil.el@wanadoo.fr> Cc: John Levon <levon@movementarian.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
