* net: smc91x: fix SMC accessesRussell King2016-08-282-2/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit b70661c70830 ("net: smc91x: use run-time configuration on all ARM machines") broke some ARM platforms through several mistakes. Firstly, the access size must correspond to the following rule: (a) at least one of 16-bit or 8-bit access size must be supported (b) 32-bit accesses are optional, and may be enabled in addition to the above. Secondly, it provides no emulation of 16-bit accesses, instead blindly making 16-bit accesses even when the platform specifies that only 8-bit is supported. Reorganise smc91x.h so we can make use of the existing 16-bit access emulation already provided - if 16-bit accesses are supported, use 16-bit accesses directly, otherwise if 8-bit accesses are supported, use the provided 16-bit access emulation. If neither, BUG(). This exactly reflects the driver behaviour prior to the commit being fixed. Since the conversion incorrectly cut down the available access sizes on several platforms, we also need to go through every platform and fix up the overly-restrictive access size: Arnd assumed that if a platform can perform 32-bit, 16-bit and 8-bit accesses, then only a 32-bit access size needed to be specified - not so, all available access sizes must be specified. This likely fixes some performance regressions in doing this: if a platform does not support 8-bit accesses, 8-bit accesses have been emulated by performing a 16-bit read-modify-write access. Tested on the Intel Assabet/Neponset platform, which supports only 8-bit accesses, which was broken by the original commit. * dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrsKrzysztof Kozlowski2016-08-041-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Implement FETCH-OP atomic primitives, these are very similar to the existing OP-RETURN primitives we already have, except they return the value of the atomic variable _before_ modification. * | locking/spinlock, arch: Update and fix spin_unlock_wait() implementationsPeter Zijlstra2016-06-141-2/+3
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch updates/fixes all spin_unlock_wait() implementations. The update is in semantics; where it previously was only a control dependency, we now upgrade to a full load-acquire to match the store-release from the spin_unlock() we waited on. This ensures that when spin_unlock_wait() returns, we're guaranteed to observe the full critical section we waited on. This fixes a number of spin_unlock_wait() users that (not unreasonably) rely on this. I also fixed a number of ticket lock versions to only wait on the current lock holder, instead of for a full unlock, as this is sufficient. Furthermore; again for ticket locks; I added an smp_rmb() in between the initial ticket load and the spin loop testing the current value because I could not convince myself the address dependency is sufficient, esp. if the loads are of different sizes. I'm more than happy to remove this smp_rmb() again if people are certain the address dependency does indeed work as expected. Note: PPC32 will be fixed independently Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Paul E. * printk/nmi: generic solution for safe printk in NMIPetr Mladek2016-05-201-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | printk() takes some locks and could not be used a safe way in NMI context. The chance of a deadlock is real especially when printing stacks from all CPUs. This particular problem has been addressed on x86 by the commit a9edc8809328 ("x86/nmi: Perform a safe NMI stack trace on all CPUs"). The patchset brings two big advantages. First, it makes the NMI backtraces safe on all architectures for free. Second, it makes all NMI messages almost safe on all architectures (the temporary buffer is limited. We still should keep the number of messages in NMI context at minimum). Note that there already are several messages printed in NMI context: WARN_ON(in_nmi()), BUG_ON(in_nmi()), anything being printed out from MCE handlers. These are not easy to avoid. This patch reuses most of the code and makes it generic. It is useful for all messages and architectures that support NMI. The alternative printk_func is set when entering and is reseted when leaving NMI context. It queues IRQ work to copy the messages into the main ring buffer in a safe context. __printk_nmi_flush() copies all available messages and reset the buffer. Then we could use a simple cmpxchg operations to get synchronized with writers. There is also used a spinlock to get synchronized with other flushers. We do not longer use seq_buf because it depends on external lock. It would be hard to make all supported operations safe for a lockless use. It would be confusing and error prone to make only some operations safe. The code is put into separate printk/nmi.c as suggested by Steven Rostedt. It needs a per-CPU buffer and is compiled only on architectures that call nmi_enter(). This is achieved by the new HAVE_NMI Kconfig flag. The are MN10300 and Xtensa architectures. We need to clean up NMI handling there first. Let's do it separately. The patch is heavily based on the draft from Peter Zijlstra, see https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/6/10/327 [arnd@arndb.de: printk-nmi: use %zu format string for size_t] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: min_t->min - all types are size_t here] Signed-off-by: Petr Mladek <pmladek@suse.com> Suggested-by: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Suggested-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Cc: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Acked-by: Russell King <rmk+kernel@arm.linux.org.uk> [arm part] Cc: Daniel Thompson <daniel.thompson@linaro.org> Cc: Jiri Kosina <jkosina@suse.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@redhat.com> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> Cc: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: David Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Cc: Daniel Thompson <daniel.thompson@linaro.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

| * ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original typesAlexander Duyck2016-03-131-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. There is quite a lot of interesting stuff going on. The patches to other subsystems and arch-wide are ACKed as far as possible, though I consider things like per-arch <asm/gpio.h> as essentially a part of the GPIO subsystem so it should not be needed. Core changes: - The gpio_chip is now a *real device*. Until now the gpio chips were just piggybacking the parent device or (gasp) floating in space outside of the device model. We now finally make GPIO chips devices. The gpio_chip will create a gpio_device which contains a struct device, and this gpio_device struct is kept private. Anything that needs to be kept private from the rest of the kernel will gradually be moved over to the gpio_device. - As a result of making the gpio_device a real device, we have added resource management, so devm_gpiochip_add_data() will cut down on overhead and reduce code lines. A huge slew of patches convert almost all drivers in the subsystem to use this. - Building on making the GPIO a real device, we add the first step of a new userspace ABI: the GPIO character device. We take small steps here, so we first add a pure *information* ABI and the tool "lsgpio" that will list all GPIO devices on the system and all lines on these devices. We can now discover GPIOs properly from userspace. We still have not come up with a way to actually *use* GPIOs from userspace. - To encourage people to use the character device for the future, we have it always-enabled when using GPIO. The old sysfs ABI is still opt-in (and can be used in parallel), but is marked as deprecated. We will keep it around for the foreseeable future, but it will not be extended to cover ever more use cases. Cleanup: - Bjorn Helgaas removed a whole slew of per-architecture <asm/gpio.h> includes. This dates back to when GPIO was an opt-in feature and no shared library even existed: just a header file with proper prototypes was provided and all semantics were up to the arch to implement. These patches make the GPIO chip even more a proper device and cleans out leftovers of the old in-kernel API here and there. Still some cruft is left but it's very little now. - There is still some clamping of return values for .get() going on, but we now return sane values in the vast majority of drivers and the errorpath is sanitized. Some patches for powerpc, blackfin and unicore still drop in. - We continue to switch the ARM, MIPS, blackfin, m68k local GPIO implementations to use gpiochip_add_data() and cut down on code lines. - MPC8xxx is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. - ATH79 is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. New drivers: - WinSystems WS16C48 - Acces 104-DIO-48E - F81866 (a F7188x variant) - Qoric (a MPC8xxx variant) - TS-4800 - SPI serializers (pisosr): simple 74xx shift registers connected to SPI to obtain a dirt-cheap output-only GPIO expander. - Texas Instruments TPIC2810 - Texas Instruments TPS65218 - Texas Instruments TPS65912 - X-Gene (ARM64) standby GPIO controller" * tag 'gpio-v4.6-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio: (194 commits) Revert "Share upstreaming patches" gpio: mcp23s08: Fix clearing of interrupt. gpiolib: Fix comment referring to gpio_*() in gpiod_*() gpio: pca953x: Fix pca953x_gpio_set_multiple() on 64-bit gpio: xgene: Fix kconfig for standby GIPO contoller gpio: Add generic serializer DT binding gpio: uapi: use 0xB4 as ioctl() major gpio: tps65912: fix bad merge Revert "gpio: lp3943: Drop pin_used and lp3943_gpio_request/lp3943_gpio_free" gpio: omap: drop dev field from gpio_bank structure gpio: mpc8xxx: Slightly update the code for better readability gpio: mpc8xxx: Remove *read_reg and *write_reg from struct mpc8xxx_gpio_chip gpio: mpc8xxx: Fixup setting gpio direction output gpio: mcp23s08: Add support for mcp23s18 dt-bindings: gpio: altera: Fix altr,interrupt-type property gpio: add driver for MEN 16Z127 GPIO controller gpio: lp3943: Drop pin_used and lp3943_gpio_request/lp3943_gpio_free gpio: timberdale: Switch to devm_ioremap_resource() gpio: ts4800: Add IMX51 dependency gpiolib: rewrite gpiodev_add_to_list ...

|/ / | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Let the non boot cpus call into idle with the corresponding hotplug state, so the hotplug core can handle the further bringup. That's a first step to convert the boot side of the hotplugged cpus to do all the synchronization with the other side through the state machine. For now it'll only start the hotplug thread and kick the full bringup of the cpu. This aids improved helpers and should make certain abstractions easier in the future. Also causes a lot of churn, helped along by some automated code transformations - add more core support for detecting (and "correcting") bitflips in erased pages; requires opt-in by drivers, but at least we kill a few bad implementations and hopefully stave off future ones - pxa3xx_nand: cleanups, a few fixes, and PM improvements - new JZ4780 NAND driver SPI NOR: - provide default erase function, for controllers that just want to send the SECTOR_ERASE command directly - fix some module auto-loading issues with device tree ("jedec,spi-nor") - error handling fixes - new Mediatek QSPI flash driver Other: - cfi: force valid geometry Kconfig (finally!) That probably should've been 5 or 6 separate branches, but by the time I'd realized how large and mixed that bag had become it had been too close to -final to play with rebasing. Some fs/namei.c cleanups there, memdup_user_nul() introduction and switching open-coded instances, burying long-dead code, whack-a-mole of various kinds, several new helpers for ->llseek(), assorted cleanups and fixes from various people, etc. One piece probably deserves special mention - Neil's lookup_one_len_unlocked(). Similar to lookup_one_len(), but gets called without ->i_mutex and tries to avoid ever taking it. That, of course, means that it's not useful for any directory modifications, but things like getting inode attributes in nfds readdirplus are fine with that. The files to move were produced via the following script: mkdir include/media/i2c (cd include/media; for i in *.h; do n=`echo $i|sed s/.h$/.c/`; if [ -e ../../drivers/media/i2c/$n ]; then echo $i; git mv $i i2c/; fi; done) (cd include/media; for i in *.h; do n=`echo $i|sed s/.h$/.c/`; if [ -e ../../drivers/media/*/i2c/$n ]; then echo $i; git mv $i i2c/; fi; done) for i in include/media/*.h; do n=`basename $i`; (for j in $(git grep -l $n); do dirname $j; done)|sort|uniq|grep -ve '^.$' > list; num=$(wc -l list|cut -d' ' -f1); if [ $num == 1 ]; then if [ "`grep i2c list`" != "" ]; then git mv $i include/media/i2c; fi; fi; done And the references corrected via this script: MAIN_DIR="media/" PREV_DIR="media/" DIRS="i2c/" echo "Checking affected files" >&2 for i in $DIRS; do for j in $(find include/$MAIN_DIR/$i -type f -name '*.h'); do n=`basename $j` git grep -l $n done done|sort|uniq >files && ( echo "Handling files..." >&2; echo "for i in \$(cat files|grep -v Documentation); do cat \$i | \\"; ( cd include/$MAIN_DIR; for j in $DIRS; do for i in $(ls $j); do echo "perl -ne 's,(include [\\\"\\<])$PREV_DIR($i)([\\\"\\>]),\1$MAIN_DIR$j\2\3,; print \$_' |\\"; done; done; echo "cat > a && mv a \$i; done"; ); echo "Handling documentation..." >&2; echo "for i in MAINTAINERS \$(cat files); do cat \$i | \\"; ( cd include/$MAIN_DIR; for j in $DIRS; do for i in $(ls $j); do echo " perl -ne 's,include/$PREV_DIR($i)\b,include/$MAIN_DIR$j\1,; print \$_' |\\"; done; done; echo "cat > a && mv a \$i; done" ); ) >script && . ./script Merged Sakari Ailus patch that moves smiapp.h to include/media/i2c. * Merge branch 'strscpy' of ↵Linus Torvalds2015-10-041-0/+1
|\ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile Pull strscpy string copy function implementation from Chris Metcalf. Chris sent this during the merge window, but I waffled back and forth on the pull request, which is why it's going in only now. The new "strscpy()" function is definitely easier to use and more secure than either strncpy() or strlcpy(), both of which are horrible nasty interfaces that have serious and irredeemable problems. strncpy() has a useless return value, and doesn't NUL-terminate an overlong result. To make matters worse, it pads a short result with zeroes, which is a performance disaster if you have big buffers. strlcpy(), by contrast, is a mis-designed "fix" for strlcpy(), lacking the insane NUL padding, but having a differently broken return value which returns the original length of the source string. Which means that it will read characters past the count from the source buffer, and you have to trust the source to be properly terminated. It also makes error handling fragile, since the test for overflow is unnecessarily subtle. strscpy() avoids both these problems, guaranteeing the NUL termination (but not excessive padding) if the destination size wasn't zero, and making the overflow condition very obvious by returning -E2BIG. It also doesn't read past the size of the source, and can thus be used for untrusted source data too. So why did I waffle about this for so long? Every time we introduce a new-and-improved interface, people start doing these interminable series of trivial conversion patches. And every time that happens, somebody does some silly mistake, and the conversion patch to the improved interface actually makes things worse. Because the patch is mindnumbing and trivial, nobody has the attention span to look at it carefully, and it's usually done over large swatches of source code which means that not every conversion gets tested. So I'm pulling the strscpy() support because it *is* a better interface. But I will refuse to pull mindless conversion patches. Use this in places where it makes sense, but don't do trivial patches to fix things that aren't actually known to be broken. * 'strscpy' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cmetcalf/linux-tile: tile: use global strscpy() rather than private copy string: provide strscpy() Make asm/word-at-a-time.h available on all architectures

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Added the x86 implementation of word-at-a-time to the generic version, which previously only supported big-endian. Omitted the x86-specific load_unaligned_zeropad(), which in any case is also not present for the existing BE-only implementation of a word-at-a-time, and is only used under CONFIG_DCACHE_WORD_ACCESS. Added as a "generic-y" to the Kbuilds of all architectures that didn't previously have it. Signed-off-by: Chris Metcalf <cmetcalf@ezchip.com>
* | genirq: Remove irq argument from irq flow handlersThomas Gleixner2015-09-164-13/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most interrupt flow handlers do not use the irq argument. Those few which use it can retrieve the irq number from the irq descriptor. Remove the argument. Search and replace was done with coccinelle and some extra helper scripts around it. Thanks to Julia for her help!
