* Remove the arm26 portAdrian Bunk2007-07-31118-24770/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | The arm26 port has been in a state where it was far from even compiling for quite some time. Ian Molton agreed with the removal. * remove unused TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME flagStephane Eranian2007-07-311-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Remove unused TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME flag for all processor architectures. The flag was not used excecpt on IA-64 where the patch replaces it with TIF_PERFMON_WORK. * take declarations of enable_irq() et.al. to linux/interrupt.hAl Viro2007-07-222-2/+6
| | | | | | | | | | Now that the last inlined instances are gone, all that is left to do is turning disable_irq_nosync on arm26 and m68k from defines to aliases and we are all set - we can make these externs in linux/interrupt.h uncoditional and kill remaining instances in asm/irq.h Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
* mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt2007-07-201-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). * mm: fault feedback #2Nick Piggin2007-07-191-16/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. This requires requires all handle_mm_fault callers to be modified (possibly the modifications should go further and do things like fault accounting in handle_mm_fault -- however that would be for another patch). * Remove the last few UMSDOS leftoversJesper Juhl2007-07-161-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The UMSDOS filesystem was removed back in 2.6.11, but some tiny bits stuck around. This patch removes the few remaining leftovers. The only things left behind after this are the entries in the CREDITS file and the ioctl number in Documentation/ioctl-number.txt as documentation. This third (hopefully final) version of the patch doesn't edit the arch/um/config.release file, since Jeff Dike pointed out to me that it should die completely, and asked me to remove it from my patch as he'll send in a seperate patch removing the file completely. * dma-mapping: prevent dma dependent code from linking on !HAS_DMA archsDan Williams2007-07-161-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Continuing the work started in 411f0f3edc141a582190d3605cadd1d993abb6df ... This enables code with a dma path, that compiles away, to build without requiring additional code factoring. It also prevents code that calls dma_alloc_coherent and dma_free_coherent from linking whereas previously the code would hit a BUG() at run time. Finally, it allows archs that set !HAS_DMA to delete their asm/dma-mapping.h file. * [PATCH] Set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for arches with GENERIC_ISA_DMAChristoph Lameter2007-02-111-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA channel management. Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to provide memory below 16M. So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA. Undo the modifications to mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig. Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be switched off. It can only be switched off if we know that all devices supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and IA64/Altix). In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory (like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that call. In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA. * [PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells2006-12-081-0/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. * [PATCH] kill wall_jiffiesAtsushi Nemoto2006-10-011-10/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies. So we can kill wall_jiffies completely. This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of kill the whole "if" block. * [PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)Atsushi Nemoto2006-09-291-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. * [PATCH] pidspace: is_init()Sukadev Bhattiprolu2006-09-291-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. With multiple pid spaces for all of the cases affected we are looking for only the first process on the system, not some other process that has pid == 1. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] make PROT_WRITE imply PROT_READJason Baron2006-09-291-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Make PROT_WRITE imply PROT_READ for a number of architectures which don't support write only in hardware. While looking at this, I noticed that some architectures which do not support write only mappings already take the exact same approach. For example, in arch/alpha/mm/fault.c: " if (cause < 0) { if (!(vma->vm_flags & VM_EXEC)) goto bad_area; } else if (!cause) { /* Allow reads even for write-only mappings */ if (!(vma->vm_flags & (VM_READ | VM_WRITE))) goto bad_area; } else { if (!(vma->vm_flags & VM_WRITE)) goto bad_area; } " Thus, this patch brings other architectures which do not support write only mappings in-line and consistent with the rest. I've verified the patch on ia64, x86_64 and x86. Additional discussion: Several architectures, including x86, can not support write-only mappings. The pte for x86 reserves a single bit for protection and its two states are read only or read/write. Thus, write only is not supported in h/w. Currently, if i 'mmap' a page write-only, the first read attempt on that page creates a page fault and will SEGV. That check is enforced in arch/blah/mm/fault.c. However, if i first write that page it will fault in and the pte will be set to read/write. Thus, any subsequent reads to the page will succeed. It is this inconsistency in behavior that this patch is attempting to address. Furthermore, if the page is swapped out, and then brought back the first read will also cause a SEGV. Thus, any arbitrary read on a page can potentially result in a SEGV. According to the SuSv3 spec, "if the application requests only PROT_WRITE, the implementation may also allow read access." Also as mentioned, some archtectures, such as alpha, shown above already take the approach that i am suggesting. The counter-argument to this raised by Arjan, is that the kernel is enforcing the write only mapping the best it can given the h/w limitations. This is true, however Alan Cox, and myself would argue that the inconsitency in behavior, that is applications can sometimes work/sometimes fails is highly undesireable. If you read through the thread, i think people, came to an agreement on the last patch i posted, as nobody has objected to it... * [PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl2006-07-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. * [PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen2006-03-271-6/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64.
