* tree wide: get rid of __GFP_REPEAT for order-0 allocations part IMichal Hocko2016-06-241-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the third version of the patchset previously sent [1]. I have basically only rebased it on top of 4.7-rc1 tree and dropped "dm: get rid of superfluous gfp flags" which went through dm tree. I am sending it now because it is tree wide and chances for conflicts are reduced considerably when we want to target rc2. I plan to send the next step and rename the flag and move to a better semantic later during this release cycle so we will have a new semantic ready for 4.8 merge window hopefully. Motivation: While working on something unrelated I've checked the current usage of __GFP_REPEAT in the tree. It seems that a majority of the usage is and always has been bogus because __GFP_REPEAT has always been about costly high order allocations while we are using it for order-0 or very small orders very often. It seems that a big pile of them is just a copy&paste when a code has been adopted from one arch to another. I think it makes some sense to get rid of them because they are just making the semantic more unclear. Please note that GFP_REPEAT is documented as * __GFP_REPEAT: Try hard to allocate the memory, but the allocation attempt * _might_ fail. This depends upon the particular VM implementation. while !costly requests have basically nofail semantic. So one could reasonably expect that order-0 request with __GFP_REPEAT will not loop for ever. This is not implemented right now though. I would like to move on with __GFP_REPEAT and define a better semantic for it. $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT origin/master | wc -l 111 $ git grep __GFP_REPEAT | wc -l 36 So we are down to the third after this patch series. The remaining places really seem to be relying on __GFP_REPEAT due to large allocation requests. This still needs some double checking which I will do later after all the simple ones are sorted out. I am touching a lot of arch specific code here and I hope I got it right but as a matter of fact I even didn't compile test for some archs as I do not have cross compiler for them. Patches should be quite trivial to review for stupid compile mistakes though. The tricky parts are usually hidden by macro definitions and thats where I would appreciate help from arch maintainers. [1] http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1461849846-27209-1-git-send-email-mhocko@kernel.org This patch (of 19): __GFP_REPEAT has a rather weak semantic but since it has been introduced around 2.6.12 it has been ignored for low order allocations. Yet we have the full kernel tree with its usage for apparently order-0 allocations. This is really confusing because __GFP_REPEAT is explicitly documented to allow allocation failures which is a weaker semantic than the current order-0 has (basically nofail). Let's simply drop __GFP_REPEAT from those places. This would allow to identify place which really need allocator to retry harder and formulate a more specific semantic for what the flag is supposed to do actually. * lib/GCD.c: use binary GCD algorithm instead of EuclideanZhaoxiu Zeng2016-05-201-0/+1

If a and b are all evens, then gcd(a,b) = 2 * gcd(a/2, b/2) 2. If a is even and b is odd, then gcd(a,b) = gcd(a/2, b) 3. If a and b are all odds, then gcd(a,b) = gcd((a-b)/2, b) = gcd((a+b)/2, b) Even on x86 machines with reasonable division hardware, the binary algorithm runs about 25% faster (80% the execution time) than the division-based Euclidian algorithm. On platforms like Alpha and ARMv6 where division is a function call to emulation code, it's even more significant. There are two variants of the code here, depending on whether a fast __ffs (find least significant set bit) instruction is available. This allows the unpredictable branches in the bit-at-a-time shifting loop to be eliminated. If fast __ffs is not available, the "even/odd" GCD variant is used. I use the following code to benchmark: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdint.h> #include <string.h> #include <time.h> #include <unistd.h> #define swap(a, b) \ do { \ a ^= b; \ b ^= a; \ a ^= b; \ } while (0) unsigned long gcd0(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r; if (a < b) { swap(a, b); } if (b == 0) return a; while ((r = a % b) != 0) { a = b; b = r; } return b; } unsigned long gcd1(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; b >>= __builtin_ctzl(b); for (;;) { a >>= __builtin_ctzl(a); if (a == b) return a << __builtin_ctzl(r); if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; } } unsigned long gcd2(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; r &= -r; while (!(b & r)) b >>= 1; for (;;) { while (!(a & r)) a >>= 1; if (a == b) return a; if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; a >>= 1; if (a & r) a += b; a >>= 1; } } unsigned long gcd3(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; b >>= __builtin_ctzl(b); if (b == 1) return r & -r; for (;;) { a >>= __builtin_ctzl(a); if (a == 1) return r & -r; if (a == b) return a << __builtin_ctzl(r); if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; } } unsigned long gcd4(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) { unsigned long r = a | b; if (!a || !b) return r; r &= -r; while (!(b & r)) b >>= 1; if (b == r) return r; for (;;) { while (!(a & r)) a >>= 1; if (a == r) return r; if (a == b) return a; if (a < b) swap(a, b); a -= b; a >>= 1; if (a & r) a += b; a >>= 1; } } static unsigned long (*gcd_func[])(unsigned long a, unsigned long b) = { gcd0, gcd1, gcd2, gcd3, gcd4, }; #define TEST_ENTRIES (sizeof(gcd_func) / sizeof(gcd_func[0])) #if defined(__x86_64__) #define rdtscll(val) do { \ unsigned long __a,__d; \ __asm__ __volatile__("rdtsc" : "=a" (__a), "=d" (__d)); \ (val) = ((unsigned long long)__a) | (((unsigned long long)__d)<<32); \ } while(0) static unsigned long long benchmark_gcd_func(unsigned long (*gcd)(unsigned long, unsigned long), unsigned long a, unsigned long b, unsigned long *res) { unsigned long long start, end; unsigned long long ret; unsigned long gcd_res; rdtscll(start); gcd_res = gcd(a, b); rdtscll(end); if (end >= start) ret = end - start; else ret = ~0ULL - start + 1 + end; *res = gcd_res; return ret; } #else static inline struct timespec read_time(void) { struct timespec time; clock_gettime(CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID, &time); return time; } static inline unsigned long long diff_time(struct timespec start, struct timespec end) { struct timespec temp; if ((end.tv_nsec - start.tv_nsec) < 0) { temp.tv_sec = end.tv_sec - start.tv_sec - 1; temp.tv_nsec = 1000000000ULL + end.tv_nsec - start.tv_nsec; } else { temp.tv_sec = end.tv_sec - start.tv_sec; temp.tv_nsec = end.tv_nsec - start.tv_nsec; } return temp.tv_sec * 1000000000ULL + temp.tv_nsec; } static unsigned long long benchmark_gcd_func(unsigned long (*gcd)(unsigned long, unsigned long), unsigned long a, unsigned long b, unsigned long *res) { struct timespec start, end; unsigned long gcd_res; start = read_time(); gcd_res = gcd(a, b); end = read_time(); *res = gcd_res; return diff_time(start, end); } #endif static inline unsigned long get_rand() { if (sizeof(long) == 8) return (unsigned long)rand() << 32 | rand(); else return rand(); } int main(int argc, char **argv) { unsigned int seed = time(0); int loops = 100; int repeats = 1000; unsigned long (*res)[TEST_ENTRIES]; unsigned long long elapsed[TEST_ENTRIES]; int i, j, k; for (;;) { int opt = getopt(argc, argv, "n:r:s:"); /* End condition always first */ if (opt == -1) break; switch (opt) { case 'n': loops = atoi(optarg); break; case 'r': repeats = atoi(optarg); break; case 's': seed = strtoul(optarg, NULL, 10); break; default: /* You won't actually get here. */ break; } } res = malloc(sizeof(unsigned long) * TEST_ENTRIES * loops); memset(elapsed, 0, sizeof(elapsed)); srand(seed); for (j = 0; j < loops; j++) { unsigned long a = get_rand(); /* Do we have args? */ unsigned long b = argc > optind ? strtoul(argv[optind], NULL, 10) : get_rand(); unsigned long long min_elapsed[TEST_ENTRIES]; for (k = 0; k < repeats; k++) { for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) { unsigned long long tmp = benchmark_gcd_func(gcd_func[i], a, b, &res[j][i]); if (k == 0 || min_elapsed[i] > tmp) min_elapsed[i] = tmp; } } for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) elapsed[i] += min_elapsed[i]; } for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) printf("gcd%d: elapsed %llu\n", i, elapsed[i]); k = 0; srand(seed); for (j = 0; j < loops; j++) { unsigned long a = get_rand(); unsigned long b = argc > optind ? strtoul(argv[optind], NULL, 10) : get_rand(); for (i = 1; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) { if (res[j][i] != res[j][0]) break; } if (i < TEST_ENTRIES) { if (k == 0) { k = 1; fprintf(stderr, "Error:\n"); } fprintf(stderr, "gcd(%lu, %lu): ", a, b); for (i = 0; i < TEST_ENTRIES; i++) fprintf(stderr, "%ld%s", res[j][i], i < TEST_ENTRIES - 1 ? This means that if the hardware has registers to configure open drain or open source configuration, we use that rather than (as we did before) try to emulate it by switching the line to an input to get high impedance. This is also documented throughly in Documentation/gpio/driver.txt for those of you who did not understand one word of what I just wrote. - Start to do away with the unnecessarily complex and unitelligible ARCH_REQUIRE_GPIOLIB and ARCH_WANT_OPTIONAL_GPIOLIB, another evolutional artifact from the time when the GPIO subsystem was unmaintained. Archs can now just select GPIOLIB and be done with it, cleanups to arches will trickle in for the next kernel. Some minor archs ACKed the changes immediately so these are included in this pull request. - Advancing the use of the data pointer inside the GPIO device for storing driver data by switching the PowerPC, Super-H Unicore and a few other subarches or subsystem drivers in ALSA SoC, Input, serial, SSB, staging etc to use it. - The initialization now reads the input/output state of the GPIO lines, so that each GPIO descriptor knows - if this callback is implemented - whether the line is input or output. This also reflects nicely in userspace "lsgpio". - It is now possible to name GPIO producer names, line names, from the device tree. (Platform data has been supported for a while). I bet we will get a similar mechanism for ACPI one of those days. This makes is possible to get sensible producer names for e.g. GPIO rails in "lsgpio" in userspace. New drivers: - New driver for the Loongson1. - The XLP driver now supports Broadcom Vulcan ARM64. - The IT87 driver now supports IT8620 and IT8628. - The PCA953X driver now supports Galileo Gen2. Driver improvements: - MCP23S08 was switched to use the gpiolib irqchip helpers and now also suppors level-triggered interrupts. - 74x164 and RCAR now supports the .set_multiple() callback - AMDPT was converted to use generic GPIO. - TC3589x, TPS65218, SX150X, F7188X, MENZ127, VX855, WM831X, WM8994 support the new single ended callback for open drain and in some cases open source. - Implement the .get_direction() callback for a few more drivers like PL061, Xgene. Cleanups: - Paul Gortmaker combed through the drivers and de-modularized those who are not really modules. - Move the GPIO poweroff DT bindings to the power subdir where they belong. - Rename gpio-generic.c to gpio-mmio.c, which is much more to the point. This is the main parallel directory work by Al that makes the vfs layer able to do lookup and readdir in parallel within a single directory. That's a big change, since this used to be all protected by the directory inode mutex. The inode mutex is replaced by an rwsem, and serialization of lookups of a single name is done by a "in-progress" dentry marker. The series begins with xattr cleanups, and then ends with switching filesystems over to actually doing the readdir in parallel (switching to the "iterate_shared()" that only takes the read lock). A more detailed explanation of the process from Al Viro: "The xattr work starts with some acl fixes, then switches ->getxattr to passing inode and dentry separately. This is the point where the things start to get tricky - that got merged into the very beginning of the -rc3-based #work.lookups, to allow untangling the security_d_instantiate() mess. The xattr work itself proceeds to switch a lot of filesystems to generic_...xattr(); no complications there. After that initial xattr work, the series then does the following: - untangle security_d_instantiate() - convert a bunch of open-coded lookup_one_len_unlocked() to calls of that thing; one such place (in overlayfs) actually yields a trivial conflict with overlayfs fixes later in the cycle - overlayfs ended up switching to a variant of lookup_one_len_unlocked() sans the permission checks. I would've dropped that commit (it gets overridden on merge from #ovl-fixes in #for-next; proper resolution is to use the variant in mainline fs/overlayfs/super.c), but I didn't want to rebase the damn thing - it was fairly late in the cycle... - some filesystems had managed to depend on lookup/lookup exclusion for *fs-internal* data structures in a way that would break if we relaxed the VFS exclusion. Fixing hadn't been hard, fortunately. - core of that series - parallel lookup machinery, replacing ->i_mutex with rwsem, making lookup_slow() take it only shared. At that point lookups happen in parallel; lookups on the same name wait for the in-progress one to be done with that dentry. Surprisingly little code, at that - almost all of it is in fs/dcache.c, with fs/namei.c changes limited to lookup_slow() - making it use the new primitive and actually switching to locking shared. - parallel readdir stuff - first of all, we provide the exclusion on per-struct file basis, same as we do for read() vs lseek() for regular files. That takes care of most of the needed exclusion in readdir/readdir; however, these guys are trickier than lookups, so I went for switching them one-by-one. To do that, a new method '->iterate_shared()' is added and filesystems are switched to it as they are either confirmed to be OK with shared lock on directory or fixed to be OK with that. I hope to kill the original method come next cycle (almost all in-tree filesystems are switched already), but it's still not quite finished. - several filesystems get switched to parallel readdir. The interesting part here is dealing with dcache preseeding by readdir; that needs minor adjustment to be safe with directory locked only shared. Most of the filesystems doing that got switched to in those commits. Important exception: NFS. Turns out that NFS folks, with their, er, insistence on VFS getting the fuck out of the way of the Smart Filesystem Code That Knows How And What To Lock(tm) have grown the locking of their own. They had their own homegrown rwsem, with lookup/readdir/atomic_open being *writers* (sillyunlink is the reader there). Of course, with VFS getting the fuck out of the way, as requested, the actual smarts of the smart filesystem code etc. had become exposed... - do_last/lookup_open/atomic_open cleanups. As the result, open() without O_CREAT locks the directory only shared. Including the ->atomic_open() case. Backmerge from #for-linus in the middle of that - atomic_open() fix got brought in. - then comes NFS switch to saner (VFS-based ;-) locking, killing the homegrown "lookup and readdir are writers" kinda-sorta rwsem. All exclusion for sillyunlink/lookup is done by the parallel lookups mechanism. Exclusion between sillyunlink and rmdir is a real rwsem now - rmdir being the writer. Result: NFS lookups/readdirs/O_CREAT-less opens happen in parallel now. - the rest of the series consists of switching a lot of filesystems to parallel readdir; in a lot of cases ->llseek() gets simplified as well. One backmerge in there (again, #for-linus - rockridge fix)" * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (74 commits) ext4: switch to ->iterate_shared() hfs: switch to ->iterate_shared() hfsplus: switch to ->iterate_shared() hostfs: switch to ->iterate_shared() hpfs: switch to ->iterate_shared() hpfs: handle allocation failures in hpfs_add_pos() gfs2: switch to ->iterate_shared() f2fs: switch to ->iterate_shared() afs: switch to ->iterate_shared() befs: switch to ->iterate_shared() befs: constify stuff a bit isofs: switch to ->iterate_shared() get_acorn_filename(): deobfuscate a bit btrfs: switch to ->iterate_shared() logfs: no need to lock directory in lseek switch ecryptfs to ->iterate_shared 9p: switch to ->iterate_shared() fat: switch to ->iterate_shared() romfs, squashfs: switch to ->iterate_shared() more trivial ->iterate_shared conversions ...

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch updates csum_ipv6_magic so that it correctly recognizes that protocol is a unsigned 8 bit value. This will allow us to better understand what limitations may or may not be present in how we handle the data. For example there are a number of places that call htonl on the protocol value. This is likely not necessary and can be replaced with a multiplication by ntohl(1) which will be converted to a shift by the compiler. | * | ipv4: Update parameters for csum_tcpudp_magic to their original typesAlexander Duyck2016-03-132-12/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch updates all instances of csum_tcpudp_magic and csum_tcpudp_nofold to reflect the types that are usually used as the source inputs. For example the protocol field is populated based on nexthdr which is actually an unsigned 8 bit value. The length is usually populated based on skb->len which is an unsigned integer. This addresses an issue in which the IPv6 function csum_ipv6_magic was generating a checksum using the full 32b of skb->len while csum_tcpudp_magic was only using the lower 16 bits. As a result we could run into issues when attempting to adjust the checksum as there was no protocol agnostic way to update it. With this change the value is still truncated as many architectures use "(len + proto) << 8", however this truncation only occurs for values greater than 16776960 in length and as such is unlikely to occur as we stop the inner headers at ~64K in size. I did have to make a few minor changes in the arm, mn10300, nios2, and score versions of the function in order to support these changes as they were either using things such as an OR to combine the protocol and length, or were using ntohs to convert the length which would have truncated the value. I also updated a few spots in terms of whitespace and type differences for the addresses. Most of this was just to make sure all of the definitions were in sync going forward. | |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch add the SO_CNX_ADVICE socket option (setsockopt only). The purpose is to allow an application to give feedback to the kernel about the quality of the network path for a connected socket. The value argument indicates the type of quality report. For this initial patch the only supported advice is a value of 1 which indicates "bad path, please reroute"-- the action taken by the kernel is to call dst_negative_advice which will attempt to choose a different ECMP route, reset the TX hash for flow label and UDP source port in encapsulation, etc. This facility should be useful for connected UDP sockets where only the application can provide any feedback about path quality. It could also be useful for TCP applications that have additional knowledge about the path outside of the normal TCP control loop. There is quite a lot of interesting stuff going on. The patches to other subsystems and arch-wide are ACKed as far as possible, though I consider things like per-arch <asm/gpio.h> as essentially a part of the GPIO subsystem so it should not be needed. Core changes: - The gpio_chip is now a *real device*. Until now the gpio chips were just piggybacking the parent device or (gasp) floating in space outside of the device model. We now finally make GPIO chips devices. The gpio_chip will create a gpio_device which contains a struct device, and this gpio_device struct is kept private. Anything that needs to be kept private from the rest of the kernel will gradually be moved over to the gpio_device. - As a result of making the gpio_device a real device, we have added resource management, so devm_gpiochip_add_data() will cut down on overhead and reduce code lines. A huge slew of patches convert almost all drivers in the subsystem to use this. - Building on making the GPIO a real device, we add the first step of a new userspace ABI: the GPIO character device. We take small steps here, so we first add a pure *information* ABI and the tool "lsgpio" that will list all GPIO devices on the system and all lines on these devices. We can now discover GPIOs properly from userspace. We still have not come up with a way to actually *use* GPIOs from userspace. - To encourage people to use the character device for the future, we have it always-enabled when using GPIO. The old sysfs ABI is still opt-in (and can be used in parallel), but is marked as deprecated. We will keep it around for the foreseeable future, but it will not be extended to cover ever more use cases. Cleanup: - Bjorn Helgaas removed a whole slew of per-architecture <asm/gpio.h> includes. This dates back to when GPIO was an opt-in feature and no shared library even existed: just a header file with proper prototypes was provided and all semantics were up to the arch to implement. These patches make the GPIO chip even more a proper device and cleans out leftovers of the old in-kernel API here and there. Still some cruft is left but it's very little now. - There is still some clamping of return values for .get() going on, but we now return sane values in the vast majority of drivers and the errorpath is sanitized. Some patches for powerpc, blackfin and unicore still drop in. - We continue to switch the ARM, MIPS, blackfin, m68k local GPIO implementations to use gpiochip_add_data() and cut down on code lines. - MPC8xxx is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. - ATH79 is converted to use the generic GPIO helpers. New drivers: - WinSystems WS16C48 - Acces 104-DIO-48E - F81866 (a F7188x variant) - Qoric (a MPC8xxx variant) - TS-4800 - SPI serializers (pisosr): simple 74xx shift registers connected to SPI to obtain a dirt-cheap output-only GPIO expander. - Texas Instruments TPIC2810 - Texas Instruments TPS65218 - Texas Instruments TPS65912 - X-Gene (ARM64) standby GPIO controller" * tag 'gpio-v4.6-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linusw/linux-gpio: (194 commits) Revert "Share upstreaming patches" gpio: mcp23s08: Fix clearing of interrupt. gpiolib: Fix comment referring to gpio_*() in gpiod_*() gpio: pca953x: Fix pca953x_gpio_set_multiple() on 64-bit gpio: xgene: Fix kconfig for standby GIPO contoller gpio: Add generic serializer DT binding gpio: uapi: use 0xB4 as ioctl() major gpio: tps65912: fix bad merge Revert "gpio: lp3943: Drop pin_used and lp3943_gpio_request/lp3943_gpio_free" gpio: omap: drop dev field from gpio_bank structure gpio: mpc8xxx: Slightly update the code for better readability gpio: mpc8xxx: Remove *read_reg and *write_reg from struct mpc8xxx_gpio_chip gpio: mpc8xxx: Fixup setting gpio direction output gpio: mcp23s08: Add support for mcp23s18 dt-bindings: gpio: altera: Fix altr,interrupt-type property gpio: add driver for MEN 16Z127 GPIO controller gpio: lp3943: Drop pin_used and lp3943_gpio_request/lp3943_gpio_free gpio: timberdale: Switch to devm_ioremap_resource() gpio: ts4800: Add IMX51 dependency gpiolib: rewrite gpiodev_add_to_list ...

* mm: mlock: add mlock flags to enable VM_LOCKONFAULT usageEric B Munson2015-11-051-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The previous patch introduced a flag that specified pages in a VMA should be placed on the unevictable LRU, but they should not be made present when the area is created. This patch adds the ability to set this state via the new mlock system calls. We add MLOCK_ONFAULT for mlock2 and MCL_ONFAULT for mlockall. MLOCK_ONFAULT will set the VM_LOCKONFAULT modifier for VM_LOCKED. MCL_ONFAULT should be used as a modifier to the two other mlockall flags. When used with MCL_CURRENT, all current mappings will be marked with VM_LOCKED | VM_LOCKONFAULT. When used with MCL_FUTURE, the mm->def_flags will be marked with VM_LOCKED | VM_LOCKONFAULT. When used with both MCL_CURRENT and MCL_FUTURE, all current mappings and mm->def_flags will be marked with VM_LOCKED | VM_LOCKONFAULT. Prior to this patch, mlockall() will unconditionally clear the mm->def_flags any time it is called without MCL_FUTURE. This behavior is maintained after adding MCL_ONFAULT. If a call to mlockall(MCL_FUTURE) is followed by mlockall(MCL_CURRENT), the mm->def_flags will be cleared and new VMAs will be unlocked. This remains true with or without MCL_ONFAULT in either mlockall() invocation. munlock() will unconditionally clear both vma flags. munlockall() unconditionally clears for VMA flags on all VMAs and in the mm->def_flags field. Reading PCI bridge windows is not arch-specific in itself, but there is PCI core code that doesn't work correctly if we read them too early. For example, Hannes found this case on an ARM Freescale i.mx6 board: pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x01000000-0x01efffff] pci 0000:00:00.0: PCI bridge to [bus 01-ff] pci 0000:00:00.0: BAR 8: no space for [mem size 0x01000000] (mem window) pci 0000:01:00.0: BAR 2: failed to assign [mem size 0x00200000] pci 0000:01:00.0: BAR 1: failed to assign [mem size 0x00004000] pci 0000:01:00.0: BAR 0: failed to assign [mem size 0x00000100] The 00:00.0 mem window needs to be at least 3MB: the 01:00.0 device needs 0x204100 of space, and mem windows are megabyte-aligned. Bus sizing can increase a bridge window size, but never *decrease* it (see d65245c3297a ("PCI: don't shrink bridge resources")). Prior to dff22d2054b5, ARM didn't read bridge windows at all, so the "original size" was zero, and we assigned a 3MB window. After dff22d2054b5, we read the bridge windows before sizing the bus. The firmware programmed a 16MB window (size 0x01000000) in 00:00.0, and since we never decrease the size, we kept 16MB even though we only needed 3MB. But 16MB doesn't fit in the host bridge aperture, so we failed to assign space for the window and the downstream devices. I think this is a defect in the PCI core: we shouldn't rely on the firmware to assign sensible windows. Ray reported a similar problem, also on ARM, with Broadcom iProc. Issues like this are too hard to fix right now, so revert dff22d2054b5. * dma-mapping: consolidate dma_set_maskChristoph Hellwig2015-09-103-26/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Almost everyone implements dma_set_mask the same way, although some time that's hidden in ->set_dma_mask methods. This patch consolidates those into a common implementation that either calls ->set_dma_mask if present or otherwise uses the default implementation. Some architectures used to only call ->set_dma_mask after the initial checks, and those instance have been fixed to do the full work. h8300 implemented dma_set_mask bogusly as a no-ops and has been fixed. Unfortunately some architectures overload unrelated semantics like changing the dma_ops into it so we still need to allow for an architecture override for now. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most architectures just call into ->dma_supported, but some also return 1 if the method is not present, or 0 if no dma ops are present (although that should never happeb). Consolidate this more broad version into common code. Also fix h8300 which inorrectly always returned 0, which would have been a problem if it's dma_set_mask implementation wasn't a similarly buggy noop. As a few architectures have much more elaborate implementations, we still allow for arch overrides. * dma-mapping: consolidate dma_{alloc,free}_noncoherentChristoph Hellwig2015-09-101-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most architectures do not support non-coherent allocations and either define dma_{alloc,free}_noncoherent to their coherent versions or stub them out. Openrisc uses dma_{alloc,free}_attrs to implement them, and only Mips implements them directly. This patch moves the Openrisc version to common code, and handles the DMA_ATTR_NON_CONSISTENT case in the mips dma_map_ops instance. Note that actual non-coherent allocations require a dma_cache_sync implementation, so if non-coherent allocations didn't work on an architecture before this patch they still won't work after it. * dma-mapping: consolidate dma_{alloc,free}_{attrs,coherent}Christoph Hellwig2015-09-101-18/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since 2009 we have a nice asm-generic header implementing lots of DMA API functions for architectures using struct dma_map_ops, but unfortunately it's still missing a lot of APIs that all architectures still have to duplicate. This series consolidates the remaining functions, although we still need arch opt outs for two of them as a few architectures have very non-standard implementations. This patch (of 5): The coherent DMA allocator works the same over all architectures supporting dma_map operations. This patch consolidates them and converges the minor differences: - the debug_dma helpers are now called from all architectures, including those that were previously missing them - dma_alloc_from_coherent and dma_release_from_coherent are now always called from the generic alloc/free routines instead of the ops dma-mapping-common.h always includes dma-coherent.h to get the defintions for them, or the stubs if the architecture doesn't support this feature - checks for ->alloc / ->free presence are removed. There is only one magic instead of dma_map_ops without them (mic_dma_ops) and that one is x86 only anyway. Besides that only x86 needs special treatment to replace a default devices if none is passed and tweak the gfp_flags. An optional arch hook is provided for that.
