| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 96177299416dbccb73b54e6b344260154a445375 ("Drop free_pages()") modified nr_free_pages() to return 'unsigned long' instead of 'unsigned int'. This made the casts to 'unsigned long' in most callers superfluous, so remove them. * Move FAULT_FLAG_xyz into handle_mm_fault() callersLinus Torvalds2009-06-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | This allows the callers to now pass down the full set of FAULT_FLAG_xyz flags to handle_mm_fault(). All callers have been (mechanically) converted to the new calling convention, there's almost certainly room for architectures to clean up their code and then add FAULT_FLAG_RETRY when that support is added. * module: trim exception table on init free.Rusty Russell2009-06-121-0/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It's theoretically possible that there are exception table entries which point into the (freed) init text of modules. These could cause future problems if other modules get loaded into that memory and cause an exception as we'd see the wrong fixup. The only case I know of is kvm-intel.ko (when CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=n). Amerigo fixed this long-standing FIXME in the x86 version, but this patch is more general. This implements trim_init_extable(); most archs are simple since they use the standard lib/extable.c sort code. Alpha and IA64 use relative addresses in their fixups, so thier trimming is a slight variation. Sparc32 is unique; it doesn't seem to define ARCH_HAS_SORT_EXTABLE, yet it defines its own sort_extable() which overrides the one in lib. It doesn't sort, so we have to mark deleted entries instead of actually trimming them. * alpha: exception table sortingIvan Kokshaysky2009-05-021-1/+39
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Exception fixups for sections other than .text (like one in futex_init()) break the natural ordering of fixup entries, so sorting is required. * vmalloc: implement vm_area_register_early()Tejun Heo2009-02-201-7/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Impact: allow multiple early vm areas There are places where kernel VM area needs to be allocated before vmalloc is initialized. This is done by allocating static vm_struct, initializing several fields and linking it to vmlist and later vmalloc initialization picking up these from vmlist. This is currently done manually and if there's more than one such areas, there's no defined way to arbitrate who gets which address. This patch implements vm_area_register_early(), which takes vm_area struct with flags and size initialized, assigns address to it and puts it on the vmlist. This way, multiple early vm areas can determine which addresses they should use. The only current user - alpha mm init - is converted to use it. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>

* alpha: use generic show_mem()Johannes Weiner2008-07-262-65/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove arch-specific show_mem() in favor of the generic version. This also removes the following redundant information display: - free pages, printed by show_free_areas() - free swap pages, printed by show_swap_cache_info() - pages in swapcache, printed by show_swap_cache_info() where show_mem() calls show_free_areas(), which calls show_swap_cache_info(). * mm: drop unneeded pgdat argument from free_area_init_node()Johannes Weiner2008-07-241-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | free_area_init_node() gets passed in the node id as well as the node descriptor. This is redundant as the function can trivially get the node descriptor itself by means of NODE_DATA() and the node's id. * Introduce flags for reserve_bootmem()Bernhard Walle2008-02-071-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions between crashkernel area and already used memory. This patch: Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE. If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts. Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition inside reserve_bootmem_core(). * Use helpers to obtain task pid in printks (arch code)Alexey Dobriyan2007-10-191-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | One of the easiest things to isolate is the pid printed in kernel log. There was a patch, that made this for arch-independent code, this one makes so for arch/xxx files. * pid namespaces: define is_global_init() and is_container_init()Serge E. Hallyn2007-10-191-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into is_global_init() and is_container_init(). A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1. A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace, compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes. Changelog: 2.6.22-rc4-mm2-pidns1: - Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance and remove dependence on the task_pid(). 2.6.21-mm2-pidns2: - [Sukadev Bhattiprolu] Changed is_container_init() calls in {powerpc, ppc,avr32}/traps.c for the _exception() call to is_global_init(). This way, we kill only the cgroup if the cgroup's init has a bug rather than force a kernel panic. * During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt2007-10-161-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We have had complaints where a threaded application is left in a bad state after one of it's threads is killed when we hit a VM: out_of_memory condition. Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. With multiple pid spaces for all of the cases affected we are looking for only the first process on the system, not some other process that has pid == 1. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen2006-03-271-3/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. * [PATCH] remove set_page_count() outside mm/Nick Piggin2006-03-221-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | set_page_count usage outside mm/ is limited to setting the refcount to 1. Remove set_page_count from outside mm/, and replace those users with init_page_count() and set_page_refcounted(). This allows more debug checking, and tighter control on how code is allowed to play around with page->_count. * [PATCH] dump_thread() cleanupakpm@osdl.org2006-01-101-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ) From: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de> - create one common dump_thread() prototype in kernel.h - dump_thread() is only used in fs/binfmt_aout.c and can therefore be removed on all architectures where CONFIG_BINFMT_AOUT is not available Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] memory hotplug locking: node_size_lockDave Hansen2005-10-291-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | pgdat->node_size_lock is basically only neeeded in one place in the normal code: show_mem(), which is the arch-specific sysrq-m printing function. Strictly speaking, the architectures not doing memory hotplug do no need this locking in show_mem(). However, they are all included for completeness. This should also make any future consolidation of all of the implementations a little more straightforward. This lock is also held in the sparsemem code during a memory removal, as sections are invalidated. This is the place there pfn_valid() is made false for a memory area that's being removed. The lock is only required when doing pfn_valid() operations on memory which the user does not already have a reference on the page, such as in show_mem(). * [PATCH] mm: init_mm without ptlockHugh Dickins2005-10-291-5/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | First step in pushing down the page_table_lock. init_mm.page_table_lock has been used throughout the architectures (usually for ioremap): not to serialize kernel address space allocation (that's usually vmlist_lock), but because pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel expect caller holds it. Reverse that: don't lock or unlock init_mm.page_table_lock in any of the architectures; instead rely on pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel to take and drop it when allocating a new one, to check lest a racing task already did. Similarly no page_table_lock in vmalloc's map_vm_area. Some temporary ugliness in __pud_alloc and __pmd_alloc: since they also handle user mms, which are converted only by a later patch, for now they have to lock differently according to whether or not it's init_mm. If sources get muddled, there's a danger that an arch source taking init_mm.page_table_lock will be mixed with common source also taking it (or neither take it). So break the rules and make another change, which should break the build for such a mismatch: remove the redundant mm arg from pte_alloc_kernel (ppc64 scrapped its distinct ioremap_mm in 2.6.13). Exceptions: arm26 used pte_alloc_kernel on user mm, now pte_alloc_map; ia64 used pte_alloc_map on init_mm, now pte_alloc_kernel; parisc had bad args to pmd_alloc and pte_alloc_kernel in unused USE_HPPA_IOREMAP code; ppc64 map_io_page forgot to unlock on failure; ppc mmu_mapin_ram and ppc64 im_free took page_table_lock for no good reason. * [PATCH] remove non-DISCONTIG use of pgdat->node_mem_mapDave Hansen2005-06-231-9/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch effectively eliminates direct use of pgdat->node_mem_map outside of the DISCONTIG code. On a flat memory system, these fields aren't currently used, neither are they on a sparsemem system. There was also a node_mem_map(nid) macro on many architectures. Its use along with the use of ->node_mem_map itself was not consistent. It has been removed in favor of two new, more explicit, arch-independent macros: pgdat_page_nr(pgdat, pagenr) nid_page_nr(nid, pagenr) I called them "pgdat" and "nid" because we overload the term "node" to mean "NUMA node", "DISCONTIG node" or "pg_data_t" in very confusing ways. I believe the newer names are much clearer. These macros can be overridden in the sparsemem case with a theoretically slower operation using node_start_pfn and pfn_to_page(), instead. We could make this the only behavior if people want, but I don't want to change too much at once. One thing at a time. This patch removes more code than it adds. Compile tested on alpha, alpha discontig, arm, arm-discontig, i386, i386 generic, NUMAQ, Summit, ppc64, ppc64 discontig, and x86_64. * Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-166-0/+1157
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
